Chapter 3 - Receipts and Reckonings

The lobby descended into absolute chaos.

“Vanessa!” Harper cried out, her voice sharp enough to cut glass. “My flight cost twelve hundred dollars! You promised us the penthouse, the private cabana, and unlimited room service! We took time off work for this!”

“Shut up, Harper!” Vanessa snapped, her facade cracking completely. Her hair, previously styled to perfection, fell into her eyes as she spun back toward Richard. “You can’t kick us out! Daniel has an account here! Charge his card! Put us in another suite!”

Richard maintained his polite, impenetrable mask. “Ma’am, all luxury suites are fully booked for the summer gala weekend. Furthermore, per corporate protocol, any guest involved in verbal harassment of the property’s executive ownership is permanently barred from booking privileges across all sixteen Whitmore resorts.”

Daniel grabbed his wife’s arm. “Vanessa, stop talking. Just stop.”

“Don’t touch me, Daniel!” she screamed, shaking him off. “Look at your mother! She’s humiliating you! She’s treating your wife like garbage, and you’re just standing there like a coward! Stand up to her!”

Daniel looked like a man drowning in a puddle. For four years, he had catered to every whim Vanessa had. He had leased sports cars he couldn't afford, bought designer handbags on installment plans, and cut off his childhood friends because Vanessa deemed them ‘unsophisticated.’ Now, the harsh light of reality was exposing every lie they lived by.

“Vanessa,” Daniel muttered, his voice cracking. “She owns the hotel. What do you want me to do? Fight security?”

“I want you to be a man!” she spat.

At that moment, the front desk supervisor walked over, holding a small leather folio. She handed it to Richard, who glanced at the contents and nodded before passing it to Daniel.

“What is this?” Daniel asked, his hands shaking as he took the paper.

“During the past two hours, while awaiting check-in, Miss Vanessa’s party ordered three bottles of Dom Pérignon, two platters of Beluga caviar, and booked four full-day ultra-premium spa packages for tomorrow morning under Mrs. Margaret Whitmore’s master account,” Richard explained without an ounce of emotion.

Daniel’s eyes bulged. “Eleven thousand four hundred dollars?!”

“That was supposed to be complimentary!” Vanessa shouted. “We were staying in the owner's suite!”

“The owner is standing right here,” I remarked, stepping closer. “And the owner did not authorize a single dime. Since you canceled my booking, Richard correctly decoupled my personal account from your stay.”

I turned to Richard. “Has Daniel’s credit card been placed on file for the incidental hold?”

“Yes, Mrs. Whitmore. His primary card was swiped upon arrival.”

“Charge every penny of that bill to my son’s card,” I instructed calmly.

“Mom, no!” Daniel gasped, clutching the paper. “My card is near its limit! That charge will bounce, or it will drain our entire savings account for the house down payment!”

“Then I suggest you ask your guests for their share of the caviar,” I said.

Chloe, Brittany, and Harper immediately took three steps backward.

“Don't look at us,” Brittany said, clutching her handbag defensively. “Vanessa invited us. She said everything was paid for. We aren’t paying for your family drama!”

Within seconds, the three women dragged their luggage toward the exit doors, leaving Vanessa standing alone in the center of the lobby, surrounded by the wreckage of her own arrogance.
