Chapter 9 - The Unraveling of Chloe

Michael’s voice shook as he leaned toward me, away from the microphone. "Olivia, if you do this, you destroy Vanguard. You destroy your own wealth! Don't be insane!"

"My wealth was built on my family's honor, Michael," I said loud enough for the first three rows of journalists to hear. "Yours was built on lies, stolen jewelry, and dead children."

Behind me, the massive digital projection screen—which was supposed to display the quarterly revenue forecast—flickered. The technician at the master control desk was no longer answering to Vanguard’s internal IT team; Julian’s forensic cyber-security specialists had taken control of the feed fifteen minutes before the doors opened.

The screen lit up with a high-definition video.

It wasn't a financial chart. It was the security footage from *L’Ami Bistro*. The entire room watched in stunned, breathless silence as Chloe Davenport staged her fall, pulled out the vial of fake blood, and carefully painted her legs before screaming at the empty air.

A collective gasp swept through two hundred seasoned financial journalists.

"What is that?" an analyst from Goldman Sachs yelled from the front row. "Is that Davenport?"

Before Michael could respond, the video cut to a scanned affidavit bearing the official seal of the Los Angeles County District Attorney and the signature of Dr. Darren Hayes. Directly beside it was an audio recording waveform.

A button was pressed. Michael’s voice boomed through the auditorium speakers, crisp, cold, and unmistakable:

*“I don't care that the ultrasound is blank, Darren. Keep your mouth shut, keep the records sealed, and I'll fund your new surgical wing next quarter. She pushed her. That's the story the press gets. That's the story that breaks Olivia.”*

The room exploded. People stood on their chairs. Camera crews pushed past the security barricades, their lenses locked onto Michael's face, which had turned the color of damp chalk.

In the fourth row of the VIP gallery, Chloe Davenport jumped to her feet, clutching her Chanel purse, her eyes wide with animal panic as she tried to elbow her way toward the emergency exit.

"Miss Davenport!" Julian Vance’s voice cut through the pandemonium over the public address system. "I would advise you to remain seated. The Beverly Hills Police Department and investigators from the California State Insurance Commissioner's office are waiting outside those doors to arrest you for criminal insurance fraud, perjury, and conspiracy to commit grand extortion."

Chloe froze at the exit, her face contorting into an ugly, shrill mask of terror as two uniformed officers pushed open the glass doors and clicked handcuffs around her wrists right in front of the flashing cameras.

"Michael!" Chloe screamed, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling. "You told me you had the board! You told me she was weak! Michael, help me!"

Michael didn't move. He stood behind the podium like a statue carved of ash, his eyes hollow, watching the empire he had built on vanity crumble into nothingness in less than five minutes.
