Chapter 6 - Public Sins

"You lied to me," Michael whispered.

He didn't look at me. He looked up at Chloe, his eyes bloodshot, his voice a low, terrifying hum of betrayal. Michael Carter had an ego larger than the state of California, but more than anything, he despised being made a fool. He had championed Chloe’s cause, confronted his friends, insulted his business partners, and paraded her tragedy before the elite of Los Angeles—all based on a fabricated miscarriage designed to bind him to her.

"Michael... baby, listen to me..." Chloe whimpered, backing away as Michael rose from the floor like a wounded beast. "I did it for us! You were hesitating! You were still sleeping in her bed, feeling guilty about Lily! I knew if we had a shared tragedy, you would finally leave her! I did it out of love!"

"Love?" Michael let out a chilling, hollow laugh. "You made me look like an idiot in front of every billionaire in this state. You made me accuse the primary shareholder of my holding company of a felony assault that never happened!"

"Oh, don't pretend you care about the truth, Michael," I interrupted, my voice slicing through their pathetic domestic theater. "You didn't believe her story because you loved her. You believed it because it gave you an excuse to discard me. It was convenient. It made you the noble, suffering hero and me the crazy, infertile villain."

Michael turned his gaze back to me, the arrogance completely gone, replaced by a desperate, frantic calculation. "Liv... Olivia, listen to me. She manipulated me. She used my grief against me. You know how deeply Lily’s passing broke me—"

"Do not speak her name," I said, each word hitting him like a physical blow. "You didn't spend five minutes in Lily’s nursery after she died. You spent your time moving offshore accounts to the Cayman Islands and buying Cartier bracelets for this cheap grifter."

Julian Vance stepped into the kitchen, flanked by two private security officers wearing crisp gray uniforms. He held an official legal envelope bearing the wax seal of the Los Angeles Superior Court.

"Michael Carter," Julian said formally. "You have been officially served with a restraining order, an emergency notice of asset freeze, and a petition for the dissolution of marriage. Under the terms of the prenuptial agreement—specifically Section 14, the Infidelity and Fraud Clause—you are required to vacate this premises immediately."

"This penthouse is half mine!" Michael roared, his face purpling with rage.

"It was purchased with funds originating from the Sinclair Trust Account Number 409," Julian answered without blinking. "The trace was completed at midnight. Your name was added fraudulently without board approval while Mrs. Carter was medically incapacitated following childbirth. The lis pendens has been filed. Step out, Mr. Carter. Or spend the rest of the night in the Men's Central Jail."

Michael looked at the two burly security guards, then at Julian, and finally at me. For years, he had treated me like a decorative ornament, a quiet shadow who would endure anything just to preserve the illusion of a family.

Now, he was looking at the woman who held the executioner's axe above his neck.

"This isn't over, Olivia," Michael spat, straightening his rumpled tuxedo jacket. "You might have the cash, but I have the market. I run Vanguard. Tomorrow morning, I will issue a secondary stock offering and dilute your shares into dust."

May you like

"Try it," I said, meeting his eyes with an icy smile. "And see who the board calls first."
