Chapter 5 - A Staged Tragedy

Michael’s chest rose and fell in ragged breaths. For the first time in his life, his pristine calculating mask cracked, revealing the raw panic beneath. If the police escorted Chloe out of his penthouse in handcuffs on grand larceny charges, the news would hit the trading desk before the opening bell on Wall Street. Vanguard’s institutional investors were already nervous about the volatility in tech equities; a public scandal involving police at his personal residence would crater the stock price.

"Take it off, Chloe," Michael hissed through clenched teeth.

"What?!" Chloe shrieked, backing away toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the twinkling lights of Los Angeles. "No! You told me it was mine! You said she was pathetic and couldn't fight back!"

"I said take it off!" Michael barked, his voice turning vicious. He grabbed her wrist, his fingers digging into her skin with a brutality that shocked even Chloe. Without waiting for her compliance, he wrenched the heirloom ring off her finger.

Chloe let out a cry of pain, rubbing her red knuckles as Michael turned and slammed the ring down onto the marble island. The diamond gave a clear, metallic chime as it struck the stone.

"Take it," Michael snarled at me. "Take your goddamn dead mother's jewelry and get out of my sight. Go sleep in a hotel. We will deal with Vanguard’s lawyers on Monday."

I picked up the ring with a linen napkin, deliberately avoiding touching the surface her skin had dirtied. I slipped it into my purse, feeling its weight settle against my ribs like a long-lost talisman.

"I won't be sleeping in a hotel, Michael," I said smoothly. "You will."

"Excuse me?"

I picked up the red folder from the counter and tossed it at his chest. The heavy paper hit his tuxedo shirt and scattered across the dark floor—dozens of glossy high-resolution surveillance photographs and a transcribed police incident report.

Michael looked down, his eyes widening.

"That’s the exterior footage from *L’Ami Bistro* in West Hollywood from the night of Chloe’s supposed 'accident,'" I said, my voice cutting like a scalpel. "The private alley behind the valet station has three high-definition security cameras belonging to the adjacent jeweler. Michael, look at the timestamps."

Chloe went entirely pale, her lips trembling as she stared at the papers scattered across the floor.

"At nine-forty-one p.m.," I continued, stepping toward them, "Chloe exits the restaurant alone. She walks toward the curb, looking at her smartphone. At nine-forty-three, she places her phone on a concrete planter, steps backward, and deliberately sits down on the pavement. She pours fake theatrical blood—purchased that afternoon from a costume supply store in Burbank—between her legs. And then she starts screaming."

"No... no, that's not... she edited that!" Chloe screamed, her voice cracking into hysteria. "Michael, she’s framing me! She used AI to make those pictures!"

"The raw footage is in the custody of the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office, verified with original hash encryptions," I said. "And the best part, Michael? I was never in West Hollywood that night. At nine-forty-three, I was sitting in the board room of the Children's Hospital Foundation in Pasadena, signed into a live video conference with fourteen pediatric surgeons."

Michael slowly sank to his knees, his trembling fingers picking up one of the photographs. The camera angle was crystal clear: Chloe was smiling into her phone camera, checking her angle, right before she staged her fall.
