Chapter 7 - Blood and Ultrasound

By noon the following day, the financial world was in a state of absolute convulsions.
The front page of the *Financial Times* carried an emergency headline: *Carter Vanguard Shares Plunge 18% Amid Executive Turmoil and Sinclair Trust Capital Withdrawal.*
I sat in the mahogany-paneled conference room of Vance & Associates in Century City. Across the massive glass table sat Dr. Darren Hayes, the chief OB-GYN of St. Jude's Memorial. The man looked as if he hadn't slept in forty-eight hours. His white medical coat was gone, replaced by a rumpled tweed jacket, his hands shaking so violently that coffee sloshed over the rim of his ceramic mug.
"I have a family, Mrs. Carter," Hayes croaked, his voice cracking with panic. "Chloe told me it was just an insurance dispute. She said she needed proof of a termination to break a commercial modeling contract without paying liquidated damages! I didn't know she was using it to accuse you of assault!"
"You accepted a two-hundred-and-fifty-thousand-dollar bribe into a Nevis account, Doctor," Julian said from my right, tapping a fountain pen against a printed ledger. "Under federal law, that constitutes wire fraud, falsification of medical records under HIPAA, and conspiracy to commit extortion. The medical board will revoke your license by five o'clock. The federal prosecutor will indict you by Tuesday."
Hayes buried his face in his hands, a pathetic sob escaping his chest. "What do you want? Please, what do you want from me?"
"The truth," I said calmly. "Every document. The fake ultrasound you pulled from an anonymous donor file. The fabricated HCG blood test logs. And I want an executed affidavit admitting that Chloe Davenport was never pregnant, never miscarried, and that Michael Carter personally paid for the VIP suite where the fake recovery was staged."
Hayes looked up, his eyes wide with terror. "Michael... Michael didn't know before the incident, Mrs. Carter! But he knew *after*! Two days after Chloe was admitted, Michael came to my office. He saw the blank ultrasound logs. He realized she had faked it."
My heart, already cold, turned into absolute lead. "Say that again."
"Michael found out forty-eight hours after the alleged fall," Hayes stammered, eager to trade any secret to save his own skin. "I told him the truth because I thought he was going to sue the hospital. But instead of firing Chloe or calling the police, he smiled. He told me to keep the records sealed. He said, *'This is useful. Keep her mouth shut, and I'll fund your new surgical wing next quarter.'*"
A chilling silence settled over the room.
Michael hadn't just been deceived by his mistress. He had discovered the lie, embraced it, and weaponized it against his own grieving wife to force me into submission and strip me of my inheritance.
I leaned back into the leather chair, looking out over the panoramic view of the Los Angeles skyline.
"Julian," I said softly, the venom in my heart crystallizing into lethal intent. "Cancel the private settlement talks. We're going to Vanguard’s annual shareholder meeting tomorrow."
"You want to do this publicly?" Julian asked, a dangerous grin forming on his lips.
May you like
"Publicly," I answered. "I want every shareholder, every investor, and every journalist on Earth to watch the execution."
