Chapter 9 - The New Horizon

Six months later, the spring sun was warm and bright as I stepped out onto the private helipad atop the Sterling Tower. The cool breeze off the water rustled my hair, and I didn't need sunglasses anymore. My eyes had healed completely, leaving behind zero physical traces of the chemical burns that had tried to blind me.

My grandfather walked out beside me, leaning slightly on his polished mahogany cane, a proud smile crinkling the corners of his eyes.

"The board meeting went exceptionally well today," Grandfather said, looking out over the bustling harbor where dozens of Sterling cargo ships moved in synchronized precision. "You’ve restructured our European shipping lanes in record time. Your father would have been proud of you, Claire. I certainly am."

"Thank you, Grandfather," I said softly, linking my arm through his. "It took some turbulence, but I finally found my footing."

"And the Vance matter?" he asked gently. "Have you heard anything else?"

"Nothing," I replied honestly. "Evelyn is serving her sentence in maximum security, and Julian is working in the prison laundry room. Their social circle has completely erased them from memory. They are ghosts."

"Good," Grandfather murmured. "People who try to extinguish a fire often end up burning their own house down. You taught them a lesson they’ll never forget."

I looked out at the horizon where the sky met the sparkling blue ocean. I thought back to that terrible day in the grand foyer—the burning acid in my eyes, the cruel words of my mother-in-law, the betrayal of a husband who cared more about a wool rug than my life.

It felt like a lifetime ago. That girl who had collapsed on the marble floor, begging for mercy, no longer existed. In her place stood a woman who owned her power, controlled her destiny, and would never, ever allow anyone to make her feel small again.

"Are you ready for the gala tonight?" Grandfather asked, snapping me back to the present. "The international trade coalition is hosting a banquet in your honor as the new head of Sterling Global."

May you like

I smiled, turning away from the edge of the roof and walking back toward the private elevator.

"I'm ready," I said, my voice steady, confident, and absolute. "Let's go show them who we are."
