Chapter 3 - The Sleeping Giant

The hospital room was quiet except for the rhythmic beep of a nearby monitor and the quiet scratch of my pen against a legal pad. With my vision still heavily blurred and my eyes covered by protective gauze pads, writing was an exercise in pure tactile memory. I didn't need to see to know who I was calling.
For three years, I had kept my distance from my birth family. I had wanted to prove I could make it on my own, to build a life independent of the suffocating legacy and immense power my maiden name carried. I had hidden my background from Julian, letting him believe I was an orphan from a working-class background—a narrative Evelyn had weaponized against me from the day we met.
I dialed a secure, encrypted satellite number from memory. It rang twice before a deep, gravelly, and instantly recognizable voice answered.
"Speak."
"Grandfather," I said, my voice cracking slightly with emotion.
There was a sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line. Silence stretched for a heartbeat before Jonathan Sterling roared back into life.
"Claire? My God, child. Where have you been? Do you have any idea how hard your grandmother and I have searched for you? We received your wedding announcement, but you cut off all direct contact—"
"Grandfather, I need you to listen to me," I interrupted, cutting through his barrage of overwhelming affection and shock. "I made a mistake. A terrible mistake."
The warmth vanished from his voice instantly, replaced by the razor-sharp intensity of a billionaire industrialist who ruled global shipping, logistics, and energy grids. "Who hurt you? Give me a name. Do they need to disappear by sunrise?"
"No," I said grimly. "Not yet. But I need you to do something for me. Something absolute."
"Name it, Claire. Everything we own belongs to you anyway. What do you need?"
"I need every single contract, supply chain agreement, shipping route, and financial line of credit that Sterling Global holds with Vance Holdings audited and frozen immediately."
A low, dangerous chuckle rumbled through the phone. "Vance Holdings? Jonathan Vance's mediocre shipping and manufacturing conglomerate? Are they the ones who gave you a reason to call?"
"Julian Vance is my husband," I said quietly. "Or he won't be for much longer. Yesterday, his mother, Evelyn Vance, sprayed industrial disinfectant directly into my eyes because she thinks I'm a penniless nobody. Julian held me down while she did it. And now they are trying to cover it up, claiming I did it to myself."
The silence that followed was heavier than a falling vault door. When my grandfather spoke again, his voice was deathly quiet, devoid of all human warmth.
"They touched you. They laid hands on my granddaughter, blinded her, and thought they could lie their way out of it?"
"They think they are untouchable," I replied. "They think their wealth makes them gods."
"Vance Holdings exists entirely at our pleasure, Claire," my grandfather stated coldly. "Their entire supply chain runs through Sterling logistics ports. Their credit lines are backed by Sterling Capital underwriter reserves. Without us, their empire isn't an empire—it's a bankrupt shell sitting on a mountain of debt."
"Good," I said, a cold resolve settling into my bones. "I don't want to just destroy them legally. I want to dismantle them piece by piece, ledger by ledger, until Evelyn and Julian are begging on the streets they used to look down upon."
"Consider it done," Grandfather said. "Where are you now?"
"Being discharged from City General tomorrow morning. Julian thinks I'm coming back to their mansion so he can force me to sign a false statement."
"Let him try," my grandfather purred. "A private security detail of our own is boarding a private jet to your location right now. You won't be alone, Claire. The Sterling family is waking up. And God help anyone who stands in our way."

The call disconnected. I lay back against the hospital pillows, a slow, grim smile forming on my lips.
Julian thought he had married a penniless orphan he could discard like trash. He had no idea he had just invited the most powerful dynasty in the country straight into his front office—and they were bringing a wrecking ball.
