Chapter 5 - The First Domino

The silence in the grand study was so heavy you could hear the faint ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the hallway. Evelyn Vance, a woman who had ruled her social circle and corporate empire with an iron fist, looked as though she had been struck by lightning.

"Sterling..." Evelyn whispered, the name tasting like ash in her mouth. She looked from Marcus Vance to me, her eyes darting frantically. "No. That’s a lie. Jonathan Sterling’s granddaughter is a billionaire heiress. She’s part of the global elite. She wouldn’t... she wouldn't marry Julian. She wouldn't be living in ordinary apartments working ordinary jobs!"

"I wanted to see if anyone could love me for me, Evelyn," I said, my voice dripping with icy sarcasm as I stepped closer to her desk. "Turns out, the answer is no. Especially not when your son cares more about a wool rug than his new wife's chemical burns."

Julian stumbled backward, colliding with the edge of a mahogany bookshelf. "Claire... you’re... you’re a Sterling? Why didn't you tell me?!"

"Why?" I laughed, a bitter, harsh sound. "So you could use my family's name and credit to prop up your failing logistics company while your mother treats me like dirt? You didn't want a wife, Julian. You wanted a trophy that didn't talk back."

"That's not true!" Julian panicked, his voice cracking. He lunged forward, trying to grab my hands—the very hands he had watched burn just a day ago. "Baby, please. It was a misunderstanding. Mom was stressed, I was stressed... we didn't mean it! We're married! We're family!"

Before Julian could touch me, Marcus stepped between us, his broad shoulders blocking Julian completely. Julian bounced off the security specialist's chest, stumbling back.

"Keep your hands to yourself, Mr. Vance," Marcus warned coldly.

Evelyn finally found her voice, though it trembled with suppressed rage and mounting panic. "This is illegal! You can't just freeze our credit lines! We have binding agreements! We'll sue Sterling Global into oblivion!"

Marcus pulled a pristine leather folder from his briefcase and slid it across the desk. "Feel free to try, Mrs. Vance. But keep in mind that section fourteen, clause b of your master supply agreement grants Sterling Global the immediate right to accelerate all debt repayment upon the conviction or credible accusation of felony assault involving any primary stakeholder." He paused, looking directly at Evelyn. "Chemical assault on our principal owner's designated family member constitutes an immediate breach of moral turpitude clauses. The accounts are frozen. Period."

One of Evelyn’s corporate attorneys grabbed the folder, flipping through the pages frantically. After thirty seconds, the lawyer’s face turned sheet white. He looked up at Evelyn, sweating profusely.

"Mrs. Vance... he's right. The contract is ironclad. If Sterling calls in the loans right now... we have less than seventy-two hours before we miss our payroll and debt servicing payments. We’ll be completely insolvent by the end of the week."

Evelyn slumped back into her leather executive chair, her aura of untouchable supremacy completely shattered in less than five minutes. The empire she had spent forty years building wasn't just crumbling—it was being surgically dismantled right in front of her eyes.

"What do you want?" Evelyn whispered, her voice hollow, refusing to look me in the eye.

"I want three things," I said, my voice echoing in the grand room.

Julian scrambled forward, desperate. "Anything, Claire! Name it! We'll do it!"

"First," I said, holding up one finger. "You are going to sign immediate, uncontested divorce papers giving me full dissolution of marriage with zero financial claims on my side, and complete forfeiture of any Vance assets."

Evelyn nodded numbly. "Done."

"Second," I continued, holding up a second finger. "You, Evelyn, are going to walk down to the local police precinct this afternoon, turn yourself in, and confess to the chemical assault you committed against me on security record—which, by the way, my grandfather's tech team has already successfully recovered from your cloud backups."

Evelyn gasped, her face draining of what little color remained. "You... you recovered the deleted footage?"

"Of course we did," I smiled sweetly. "Did you really think a family that controls global satellite networks couldn't hack a home security system? The video is already sitting on the desk of the district attorney."

Julian stared at his mother in horror. "Mom? Did you... did you actually spray her? On camera?"

Evelyn couldn't even answer. She stared down at her desk, defeated.

"And third," I said, holding up the final finger, "you are both going to pack your bags, leave this estate, and never cross my path again. Because if you breathe in my direction, my grandfather won't just take your business—he’ll make sure you spend the rest of your lives in a federal penitentiary."

I turned toward the door, my heels clicking sharply against the marble floor. Marcus and the other security specialist fell in step beside me, forming an impenetrable barrier.

"Claire! Wait! Please!" Julian cried out, scrambling after me. "We can fix this! We love you!"

I stopped at the doorway, not even bothering to turn around.

May you like

"Tell it to the rug, Julian," I said coldly.

And with that, I walked out of the Vance estate, leaving behind the ruins of a dynasty that had dared to burn the wrong woman.
