Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips

The fluorescent lights of the hospital examination room hummed with an irritating, mechanical rhythm. The security officer took a deliberate step closer to the bed, his hand resting casually near his belt. His gaze flicked between Julian’s perfectly tailored suit and my tear-streaked, swollen face.
"Is that true, sir?" the officer asked, his voice dropping into an official, no-nonsense register. "Did your mother spray your wife?"
Julian let out a short, theatrical laugh, shaking his head as if dealing with an unpredictable child. "Of course not, officer. My mother is a pillar of the community. Why would she do something so absurd? My wife is under a tremendous amount of stress. Wedding planning, adjusting to our new life... she’s clearly lashing out and confabulating details."
My hands clenched the thin hospital sheets so hard my knuckles turned white. Confabulating? He was rewriting reality right in front of me, banking on the fact that I was temporarily blinded and vulnerable.
"I am not lying," I said, my voice shaking with a fury that burned hotter than the chemicals in my eyes. "She held me down while Julian pinned my shoulders. She sprayed industrial disinfectant directly into my face because she considers me penniless and beneath their social standing."
The security officer frowned, clearly sensing the stark mismatch between Julian’s polished demeanor and the raw, unscripted trauma in my voice. "We’re going to need to file an incident report, and hospital policy requires us to notify local law enforcement for any suspected chemical assault."
Julian’s jaw tightened. The easy, amused facade vanished for a split second, replaced by a cold, calculating glare. "There is no need for police involvement over a domestic misunderstanding. We can handle this privately. My family name—"
"Your family name doesn't exempt you from assault investigations, sir," the officer interrupted firmly. "I’m calling campus and city police to take statements."
Panic finally flickered in Julian’s eyes. Not because I was hurt, but because a police report threatened the pristine public image the Vance family guarded so jealously. He pulled his phone from his pocket, shooting me a venomous look before stepping out into the hallway to call the one person who always cleaned up his messes: Evelyn.
While Julian was outside spinning damage control, the ophthalmologist returned with a saline drip bag and a team of nurses.
"The burns are severe, Claire," the doctor said softly, leaning in close so only I could hear. "We’ve neutralized the active alkaline agents, but your corneal epithelium has sustained significant damage. You’re going to be on heavy steroid drops and antibiotics for weeks. Your vision will be severely impaired during recovery. I strongly advise you to cooperate with authorities."
"I will," I whispered, tears mixing with the eye drops running down my cheeks. "I won't let them sweep this under the rug."
Twenty minutes later, two police officers walked into the room. Julian returned right behind them, wearing a mask of supreme confidence. He had clearly called his family's high-priced legal counsel on his way back in.
"Officer, my wife's claims are completely baseless," Julian announced before the cops could even speak to me. "We have security cameras in the foyer. They will show that no such assault took place."
My heart skipped a beat. Cameras. The foyer had a security camera installed right above the antique grandfather clock. Evelyn had bragged about it just last week, noting how it captured everyone entering the estate.
"Yes," I said eagerly, turning my bandaged face toward the officers. "Look at the cameras. Pull the footage from yesterday afternoon. You'll see Evelyn holding the bottle. You'll see Julian holding me down."
The older of the two police officers nodded slowly, jotting notes down in a small pad. "We'll subpoena the estate's security footage immediately, Mr. Vance. If the cameras show what your wife claims, this becomes a felony domestic assault case."
Julian didn't even flinch. In fact, a smug, almost imperceptible smile played at the corners of his mouth. "By all means, officer. Request the footage. You’ll find out very quickly that my wife's imagination is running wild."
He was too confident. My stomach twisted. Why was he so willing to hand over security footage if it incriminated his mother and him?
The answer hit me with sickening clarity: Evelyn Vance controlled the estate's tech systems. She probably wiped or altered the footage the second the ambulance pulled out of the driveway. Rosa had called 911, but Evelyn had plenty of time before the police arrived to sanitize the digital record.
The officers finished taking my preliminary statement, promising to follow up once they contacted the estate manager for the surveillance logs. As they left, Julian stepped up to the side of my hospital bed. The charm was completely gone, replaced by a venomous sneer.
"You absolute fool," Julian hissed softly, leaning over so the nurses at the station couldn't hear. "Did you really think you could bring down my family with your little fairy tales? The cameras were off for maintenance yesterday afternoon. There is no proof. When you get discharged tomorrow, you are going to sign a retraction statement, or I will make sure you leave this marriage with literally nothing."
"You think money is everything, Julian," I said, turning my blinded eyes toward the sound of his voice. My voice was steady, stripped of all the fear I had felt an hour ago. "You think because I came into this marriage without a trust fund, I have no spine. You just made the biggest mistake of your life."
Julian laughed softly, patting my hand in a patronizing gesture that made my skin crawl. "Rest up, sweetheart. You're going to need all the strength you can get."
May you like
He turned and walked out of the room, leaving me alone in the sterile quiet.
He thought he had won. He thought Evelyn’s money and power shielded them from consequences. But Julian and Evelyn didn't know the truth about me. They didn't know who my blood relatives were. They didn't know that while they sat atop their fragile throne of inherited wealth, my family controlled the very lifeline that kept their entire empire breathing.
