Chapter 8 - The Beach Promise

Two months later.
The ocean breeze was warm and sweet, carrying the salty mist of the Atlantic Ocean across the white sands of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
The sun shone brightly in a clear, pale blue sky, casting a golden glow over the crashing waves.
Sitting on a colorful beach towel near the water’s edge was Yunia.
She wore a bright pink sunhat and a swimsuit, her cheeks full of rosy health, her laughter ringing out clear and loud over the sound of the ocean. Her scar from the kidney transplant was neatly healed—a small, clean line that represented not suffering, but survival and strength.
Beside her, Ronin was kneeling in the sand, helping her build a massive sandcastle complete with sea-shell towers and a moat.
"Look, Mommy!" Yunia squealed, pointing toward the water. "A dolphin!"
I looked out at the ocean. A pair of bottlenose dolphins broke through the crest of a wave a hundred yards offshore, their slick gray backs glistening in the sunlight.
"I see them, baby!" I called out, walking over and sitting down beside her on the blanket.
Ronin had bought a brand-new set of high-end diagnostic HVAC tools with the money I shared from the pawnshop transaction, and he had officially registered his new business: Carter Precision Climate Solutions. He already had three commercial maintenance contracts lined up for the winter.
As for me, my drone survey business was booming. With my name completely cleared of my father's fraudulent debts, I landed a major multi-year contract with the Ohio Department of Transportation to conduct aerial topography mapping across three counties.
Ronin wiped sand off his hands and looked at me with a proud, warm smile. "How's the view, Sis?"
I took a deep breath of the fresh ocean air, watching my healthy, vibrant daughter happily digging in the sand, her eyes shining with pure joy.
"It's the best view in the world, Ronin," I said softly.
Yunia leaned against my shoulder, holding up a small piece of purple sea glass she had found on the shore.
"Mommy," she whispered, looking up at me with her bright blue eyes. "You promised we'd come to the ocean when I got better."
I wrapped my arms around her, holding her tight against my heart, feeling her strong, steady heartbeat against mine.
"I'll always keep my promises to you, Yunia," I whispered, kissing the top of her head. "Always."

We sat together on the beach as the sun began to set over the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold, pink, and deep ocean purple—a real-life masterpiece far more beautiful than any painting.
We had survived the storm. We had conquered the dark. And together, as a real family bound by true love and sacrifice, we had finally found our way home.
