Chapter 5 - Confrontation at the Country Club

On Sunday afternoon, four days after Yunia’s surgery, the Oak Creek Country Club hosted its annual autumn charity gala.

The parking lot was filled with Bentleys, Teslas, and vintage sports cars. Wealthy donors strolled across the manicured lawns in tuxedos and evening gowns, sipping champagne while a string quartet played near the fountain.

My father sat at the head table on the terrace, flanked by Rowena—who was wearing her glistening diamond necklace—and Cresa, who looked pale and fidgety.

I walked onto the terrace wearing my work boots, dark jeans, and a black leather jacket. Ronin walked beside me, carrying a heavy leather briefcase.

The soft murmur of high-society conversation died down as guests noticed us walking straight toward the head table.

"Vesper?" my mother gasped, placing a hand over her diamond necklace in horror. "What are you doing here? Look at how you're dressed! Security!"

My father stood up, his face flushing dark red with embarrassment and rage. "Get out of here, Vesper. You’ve embarrassed this family enough!"

I stopped right in front of their table, leaning my hands on the white linen tablecloth.

"Hello, Dad. Hello, Mom," I said, my voice ringing out clearly across the silent terrace. "I just came to return something you dropped."

I reached into my pocket and tossed a stapled packet of legal documents onto my father’s dinner plate, splashing his expensive pinot noir across his white shirt.

"What is this nonsense?!" Dad barked, pulling out a napkin.

"That is a certified copy of the two-million-dollar collateral mortgage for Vanguard Auto Group Holdings," I said, stepping back so the surrounding guests could hear every word. "The one where you forged my signature to secure a fraudulent credit line."

My father went completely still. The color drained from his face so fast he looked like a corpse in a tailored suit.

"Vesper... shut your mouth," he hissed, his eyes darting nervously toward the wealthy club members watching from adjacent tables.

"And this," Ronin said, opening the briefcase and pulling out three thick photo binders, "is the complete forensic audit of your four car dealerships, proving you've been double-pledging vehicle VIN numbers to defraud regional lenders."

"You... you lied to us!" Cresa shrieked, turning toward Dad. "You told me the Porsche was fully paid off!"

"Silence, all of you!" Mom snapped, her eyes wide with panic as she clutched her necklace. "Vesper, you are making a grave mistake! We are your parents!"

"You told me scars would teach my seven-year-old daughter gratitude while she lay dying in a hospital bed, Rowena," I said, my tone as cold as winter steel. "Now let's see what prison teaches you."

"What do you want?" Dad whispered, his voice trembling, all his arrogant bluster vanishing in an instant. "What do you want from me, Vesper?"

"Twenty-five thousand dollars in certified funds," I commanded. "Delivered to my bank account by 9:00 AM tomorrow morning to clear the loan shark debt you forced me to take. Plus an immediate, legally binding release of my name from every corporate entity, mortgage, and guarantee you've ever created."

"I... I can't get twenty-five thousand in cash by tomorrow morning!" Dad stuttered. "The banks are closed!"

May you like

I pointed directly at my mother’s throat.

"Then tell Rowena to unclamp her diamond necklace," I said. "Because that necklace was bought with stolen money, and it’s going to pay off the loan that saved your granddaughter's life."
