Chapter 3 - The Forged Legacy

"How is your name on a mortgage for Dad's estate?!" Ronin exclaimed, his voice rising before he caught himself and lowered it to a fierce whisper. "You were twenty-eight six years ago! You were living in a rental apartment in downtown Columbus!"

I stared at the screen, my head spinning. I downloaded the full legal exhibit PDF attached to the county filing.

Six years ago, my father’s dealership network had suffered massive losses during a luxury vehicle market crash. To avoid bankruptcy and keep up appearances in Oak Creek Estates, he needed an immediate two-million-dollar credit line. But because of his old debts and poor corporate rating, no commercial bank would touch him.

So, he created a secondary corporate entity, Vanguard Auto Group Holdings. And to secure the low-interest commercial loan through a regional private bank, he listed me—his daughter with a pristine credit history and an engineering background—as the primary corporate officer and sole guarantor.

He had forged my signature on federal credit documents, using my identity to back a multi-million-dollar gamble.

Even worse, the exhibit revealed that my mother’s precious diamond necklace—the one she had proudly displayed on the patio while telling me that scars would teach my dying child gratitude—had been purchased three weeks ago using cash drawn directly from a line of credit tied to that very same fraudulent corporate account.

"They didn't just refuse to help us, Ronin," I said, a terrifying, quiet fury taking root deep inside my soul. "They used my identity, my credit, and my name to fund their fake luxury lifestyle. If this loan defaults, the bank won't sue Dad. They'll come after me. They'll seize every asset I own, freeze my bank accounts, and put me in prison for corporate fraud."

Ronin stared at the screen, his face turning pale with rage. "They set you up. If his business went under, you were the sacrifice."

"That's why he wanted me to live like a laborer," I realized, the pieces of my childhood falling into place with sickening clarity. "That's why he berated me for being independent, why he hated my engineering degree! He needed me ignorant, quiet, and out of the way so I would never look into my own credit records!"

At 4:00 PM, the surgical suite doors glided open.

Dr. Thorne walked out, wearing his blue surgical scrubs, his mask hanging loose around his neck. He looked exhausted, but a broad, genuine smile broke across his face as he approached us.

"Ms. Carter," Dr. Thorne said, nodding warmly. "The operation was a complete success. The new kidney pinked up instantly upon vascular re-perfusion. Yunia is stable, her vitals are excellent, and she's currently resting in the Pediatric ICU."

I closed my eyes and let out a long, shuddering breath. "Thank you, Doctor. Thank you so much."

"She’s a fighter," Thorne said softly. "You can see her in twenty minutes."

I turned to Ronin, my eyes burning with a fierce, unbreakable resolve. "Yunia is safe. Now, we have six days to pay off Kale—and completely tear down Allaric and Rowena Carter."
