Chapter 2 - The Gift of Life and the Paper Trail

The children's hospital smelled of floor wax, antiseptic, and pre-packaged hospital broth. By 7:30 AM the next morning, I stood at the billing window on the fourth floor, shoving the rubber-banded stacks of cash through the slot.

The billing administrator, a tired woman with half-moon reading glasses, blinked in absolute shock. "Ms. Carter... this is twenty-five thousand dollars in cash."

"It's the exact deposit Dr. Thorne requested," I said firmly, my hands steady on the counter despite the exhaustion burning behind my eyes. "Receipt it, clear the hold, and tell the surgical team to prepare Yunia."

Within two hours, the hospital machinery went into hyperdrive. Nurses hustled in and out of Room 417, hanging IV bags, checking vitals, and prepping my sweet seven-year-old girl.

Yunia sat on her bed, her tiny legs dangling over the edge, hugging her stuffed rabbit with the taped-up ear. She looked up at me with large, ocean-blue eyes framed by dark circles.

"Mommy?" she whispered, her voice fragile. "Am I going to get my new kidney today?"

I knelt beside her bed, taking her small, cool hand in mine and burying my face against her forehead. "Yes, baby. Today you get your new kidney. And when you wake up, we're going to start planning that trip to the beach. Purple dolphins and all."

She giggled softly, a small, beautiful sound that made all the terror of the past twenty-four hours vanish into nothing. "Promise?"

"I promise with all my heart, Yunia."

At 10:45 AM, Dr. Aerys Thorne rolled her down the wide double doors toward the operating theater. As the doors swung shut, I leaned against the cold corridor wall, my strength finally giving out. I slid down to the tile floor and buried my face in my knees, letting the tears fall freely.

Ronin walked down the hall carrying two paper cups of lukewarm cafeteria coffee. He sat on the floor beside me, handing me a cup.

"She's going to make it, Vesper," he said quietly. "Thorne is the best surgeon in the state."

"I know," I breathed, wiping my eyes with the sleeve of my flannel shirt. "Now we just have to survive Kale."

While Yunia was in surgery, I pulled out my laptop and set it on my knees. As an aerial surveyor, my job involved taking high-resolution LIDAR and thermographic drone scans of large properties, construction sites, and municipal developments. I knew how to dig through public property records, zoning maps, and corporate deeds—it was second nature to me.

I pulled up the Franklin County Auditor’s public database and searched my parents' address in Oak Creek Estates.

"What are you doing?" Ronin asked, leaning over my shoulder.

"Kale said something that didn't make sense," I replied, typing rapidly. "He said Dad took out a loan thirty years ago to build his dealership. But Dad always told us he inherited his starting capital from Grandfather's estate."

I pulled up the historic deed transfers for my parents' Oak Creek mansion—the 12,000-square-foot estate with the stone patio, swimming pool, and manicured lawns.

My eyes narrowed as a document from six years ago popped onto the screen.

It was an emergency collateral mortgage agreement against the Oak Creek property, valued at $1.8 million. Attached to it was a corporate guarantee executed under a shell company called Vanguard Auto Group Holdings.

"Look at this," I whispered, pointing at the digitized signature at the bottom of the document.

Ronin squinted at the screen. "That's Dad's signature... wait, no it isn't."

I zoomed in. The signature read Allaric Carter, but the handwriting was completely different from my father's stiff, angular penmanship. It was fluid, rounded, and distinct.

It was my mother's handwriting. But below it was another signature as a co-guarantor and power of attorney.

Vesper Carter.

My heart stopped. My blood ran cold as ice.

"That's my name," I breathed, my fingers trembling on the trackpad. "Ronin... that's my signature on a two-million-dollar corporate loan guarantee from six years ago!"
