Chapter 8 - The Legal Reckoning

On Monday morning, the legal fallout from the viral campaign reached its absolute climax.
As I sat in my office at Meridian Headquarters reviewing our quarterly quantum deployment schedule, Sarah walked in carrying a legal courier envelope.
"This just came from our corporate litigation department, Claire," Sarah said, handing me a copy of the formal court filing.
I opened the document.
Meridian Dynamics had officially filed a federal civil lawsuit against Vanessa Hollingsworth for Tortious Interference with Business Relations, Corporate Defamation, and Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress.
The lawsuit sought $500,000 in damages and included a permanent, court-ordered restraining order barring Vanessa from coming within 1,000 feet of me, my corporate apartment, or any Meridian Dynamics facility worldwide.
At two o'clock, my mother called me from a private number.
I hesitated for a moment before answering. "Hello, Mom."
"Claire... please," Mom wept into the receiver, her voice sounding broken and utterly defeated. "Please talk to your company! They served Vanessa with a lawsuit at the house this morning! They're suing her for half a million dollars! She doesn't have any money, Claire! She's facing total financial ruin!"
"She tried to ruin my career, Mom," I said, keeping my voice completely devoid of emotion. "She posted a viral smear campaign designed to get me fired."
"She was desperate!" Mom cried out. "She's your sister! And now your father has walked out on me! My whole life is falling apart, Claire! You have to fix this! Call Mr. Vance and tell him to drop the lawsuit!"
I leaned back in my leather office chair, looking out the floor-to-ceiling window at the sprawling city skyline below.
"I'm not calling Mr. Vance, Mom," I said smoothly.
"Claire! How can you be so cold?!" Mom sobbed. "Where did I go wrong with you?!"
"You didn't go wrong with me, Mom," I replied calmly. "You went wrong by teaching Vanessa that she could crush me without consequences. Actions have consequences. Vanessa is finally learning that lesson."
"Claire, please—"
"Do not call this number again, Mom," I interrupted firmly. "And if you or Vanessa try to contact me again, Meridian's legal team will add you to the restraining order."
I hung up the phone, placed it on my desk, and blocked the number permanently.
Ten minutes later, my father texted me:

“I heard about the lawsuit. It’s over, Claire. You’re safe now. Let’s get dinner tonight—just you and me.”
I smiled, typing back instantly: “I’d love that, Dad. See you at six.”
