Chapter 5 - The Ambush

Sarah didn't ask a single question. She nodded professionally, tapped her screen twice, and marked the application as REJECTED - NOT RECOMMENDED FOR CONSIDERATION.

"Done," Sarah said smoothly. "Now, let's head down to the main lab for your team introduction."

The rest of the week passed in a blur of intense, thrilling productivity.

I took control of the Quantum Division, restructuring our threat-matrix algorithms and leading daily technical stand-ups. My twelve-person engineering team—all men and women with master's degrees and years of experience—respected my technical expertise completely. When I caught a critical memory-leak error in our deployment code on Wednesday afternoon, saving the firm millions in potential server downtime, my team gave me a round of applause right in the lab.

I was finally doing what I loved, at the highest level, surrounded by people who judged me on my competence, not my obedience.

Then came Friday afternoon.

At four thirty, as I was wrapping up my weekly briefing in my office, my administrative assistant knocked gently on my glass door.

"Claire?" she whispered, looking uncomfortable. "There are three people downstairs in the VIP lobby claiming they are here for a family dinner with you. Security called up because they refuse to leave."

I squeezed my eyes shut, taking a slow, deep breath. "Who are they?"

"A middle-aged couple and a younger woman," my assistant replied. "The younger woman is causing quite a scene at the security desk, telling the guards that she's your sister and that you're hiding from your family."

My pulse quickened, but I didn't panic. I stood up, smoothed my tailored blazer, and adjusted my badge.

"Thank you," I said calmly. "I'll handle this personally."

I took the executive elevator down to the main floor.

As the doors slid open, I heard Vanessa's shrill voice before I even cleared the lobby corridor.

"I don't care what your protocol says!" Vanessa was yelling at a stone-faced security guard behind the marble desk. "I am Claire Hollingsworth's sister! She is the Lead Architect here! Call her down right now or I will have your job!"

Mom was standing behind her, nervously wringing her hands, looking around the opulent lobby. Dad stood five paces away near the entrance, looking utterly exhausted and embarrassed, holding his hands in his pockets.

When Vanessa spotted me walking out of the elevator bank, her face lit up with a mixture of triumph and anger.

"There she is!" Vanessa shouted, marching toward me in her high heels. "Claire! Why are your guards stopping us?! Tell them who we are!"

I stopped ten feet away from them, keeping my arms folded, my posture relaxed and authoritative.

"This is a restricted corporate building, Vanessa," I said loudly enough for the lobby guards to hear clearly. "You don't have security clearance. Why are you here?"

Mom hurried forward, putting a hand on my arm. "Claire! Sweetheart, please! Don't talk to your sister like that in public. We came to congratulate you properly! We wanted to take you out to celebrate your first week!"

"Is that why you came, Mom?" I asked, looking directly into my mother's eyes. "Or did you come because HR rejected Vanessa's application two hours ago?"

Mom's smile instantly evaporated.

Vanessa stepped forward, her mask of family affection dropping completely, replaced by pure venom.

"You blocked my application!" Vanessa sneered, her voice echoing off the marble lobby walls. "HR sent me a rejection email stating the application was flagged by executive review! You personally sabotaged my career!"

I looked at her without an ounce of regret.

"You aren't qualified for a brand director role at a defense tech firm, Vanessa," I said plainly. "And after what you did at my graduation, you will never step foot inside this company."

Vanessa gasped, turning to Mom with theatrical outrage. "Mom! Do you hear her?! She's using her new title to punish me!"

"Claire!" Mom snapped, her voice rising in anger. "That is your sister! How can you be so heartless?! You have a $280,000 salary now! The least you could do is help Vanessa get her foot in the door! You owe this family!"

The lobby fell dead silent. Several employees walking toward the exit stopped to watch the spectacle.

I looked at my mother, the woman who had spent my entire life asking me to dim my light so my sister wouldn't feel dark.

"I don't owe you anything, Mom," I said softly.

Before Mom could scream, my father stepped forward, stepping directly between Mom and me.

"That's enough, Susan," Dad said, his voice dropping like an anvil. "We are leaving."

"Arthur, stay out of this!" Mom yelled.

"No!" Dad roared, his voice echoing across the entire lobby, shocking everyone silent. "I am done staying out of it! Claire earned everything she has! Vanessa acted like a jealous child, and you enabled her every step of the way! I am not standing here harassing our daughter at her place of work!"

Dad turned to me, his eyes filled with profound sadness and respect.

"I'm sorry, Claire," Dad said quietly. "Go back to your office. I'll make sure they don't bother you again."

Dad grabbed Mom's arm firmly, dragging her toward the glass revolving doors, while Vanessa stood frozen, glaring at me with absolute, consuming hatred.

"This isn't over, Claire!" Vanessa spat as she turned on her heels and followed Mom out into the street. "I will make sure everyone knows what kind of monster you really are!"

I watched them leave, took a deep breath, and turned to the head security officer.

"Issue permanent building bans for Susan and Vanessa Hollingsworth," I instructed smoothly.

"Right away, Miss Hollingsworth," the officer replied.
