Chapter 6 - The Smear Campaign

Vanessa’s idea of making sure "everyone knew what kind of monster I was" manifested twenty-four hours later in the only arena she understood: social media.
On Saturday morning, I woke up to my phone buzzing incessantly with text notifications from former college classmates and colleagues.
When I opened TikTok, my stomach dropped.
Vanessa had posted a three-minute video that had gone viral overnight, accumulating over 1.2 million views.
In the video, she sat in front of a ring light, wearing no makeup, dabbing tears from her eyes with a tissue. The caption read: “When your sister gets rich and abandons her family... #toxicfamily #corporategreed #betrayal.”
"Hi guys," Vanessa sniffled into the camera, her voice trembling dramatically. "I never thought I'd have to make a video like this... but I need to speak my truth. My younger sister just got an executive job making almost $300k a year at a major tech company. But the moment she got money, she completely cut off our family..."
She paused to let out a theatrical sob.
"When I applied for a junior entry-level position at the same company to try and get back on my feet after losing my job, she personally used her executive power to block my application and had armed security throw my mother and me out of the building..."
The comment section was a toxic wasteland of outrage: - "Corporate money changes people! What a terrible sister!" - "Name the company! We need to boycott them!" - "She sounds like an absolute narcissist. Expose her account!"
By noon, several drama commentary channels had picked up the story. While Vanessa hadn't named Meridian Dynamics directly in her initial video, commenters had already cross-referenced my LinkedIn profile and dropped my name and company in the comments.
At two o'clock, my phone rang. It was Sarah from Operations.
"Claire," Sarah said, her voice serious. "Our PR team just flagged a viral social media trend involving your name and the firm. Marcus Vance wants to see you in his office immediately."
My chest felt tight as I drove to the office on a Saturday afternoon. This was exactly what Vanessa wanted—to create enough bad publicity to make Meridian Dynamics view me as a liability.
I walked into Marcus Vance's corner office on the top floor.
Mr. Vance was sitting behind his mahogany desk, watching Vanessa’s video on a tablet screen. Beside him stood the head of Global Public Relations, a sharp woman named Elena.
"Claire, sit down," Mr. Vance said calmly, gesturing to a leather chair.
"Mr. Vance, I am deeply sorry for this," I began immediately, my voice tight. "My sister is intentionally distorting facts to retaliate against me for blocking her job application—"
"Claire," Mr. Vance interrupted, holding up a hand. "You don't need to apologize for your family's dysfunction."
I paused, looking at him in surprise.
Elena leaned against the desk, holding a folder. "Claire, we run a defense intelligence firm. Did you really think our internal security team didn't record full audio and video telemetry of what happened in our lobby on Friday?"
She opened the folder, showing me a crystal-clear 4K video frame of Vanessa screaming at the guards, along with a complete audio transcript of my mother demanding I give Vanessa a job.
"Furthermore," Elena added with a cold smirk, "our legal team pulled the security footage from your university graduation ceremony last week. We have high-definition footage of your sister physically tearing your offer letter in half while your mother restrained you."
Mr. Vance folded his hands on his desk, his eyes dark and resolute.
"Your sister thought she could use public opinion to blackmail this firm and ruin your career," Mr. Vance said quietly. "She doesn't realize who she's playing with."
"What are we going to do?" I asked.

Mr. Vance smiled—a slow, lethal, corporate smile.
"We are going to release the full, unedited lobby footage and graduation video directly to the press," Mr. Vance declared. "Along with a formal cease-and-desist letter from our global legal council for defamation, corporate harassment, and tortious interference."
