Chapter 7 - The Final Gambit

The cold steel of the Walther PPK barrel caught the warm study light, gleaming like a death sentence just inches from Julian’s heart.

Michael shrank back against the bookshelf, his face draining of all color. “Victoria, wait—we weren't supposed to shoot him! The plan was just to force the signature legally through the trust proxies—”

“Shut up, Michael!” Victoria snarled without taking her eyes off Julian. “Look at him! He’s never going to sign it voluntarily. Once midnight hits, our legal window closes forever. If he dies tonight intestate, the emergency corporate succession clauses automatically transfer operational control to the executive board—which I already bought out six months ago!”

Julian didn't flinch. He stood tall, his hands relaxed at his sides, his dark eyes locked onto Victoria’s finger resting on the trigger.

“You think killing me solves your problem?” Julian asked, his voice steady, carrying an eerie, hypnotic calm. “You think the syndicate will accept a gold-digging socialite and a spineless coward as their bosses? The moment my heart stops beating, Daniel’s automated dead-man switch transmits every single financial wire transfer, forged signature, and hospital surveillance log directly to every federal prosecutor and underworld syndicate boss from Miami to New York.”

Victoria’s thumb tightened slightly on the hammer. Her eyes darted sideways for a fraction of a second toward Daniel, who stood frozen in the shadows with his weapon still holstered at low ready.

“You’re bluffing,” she hissed, though a bead of sweat rolled down her meticulously contoured cheek.

“Check your phone, Victoria,” Julian challenged quietly.

At that exact moment, Victoria’s designer handbag buzzed violently with an incoming alert. Her phone buzzed twice, three times, vibrating continuously against her hip.

Panic flickered in her eyes. With her left hand trembling, she reached into her bag, pulled out her phone, and glanced down at the screen. The display flashed a terrifying automated notification from an offshore encrypted server: DATA PACKET DEPLOYMENT IN T-MINUS 60 SECONDS. RECIPIENTS: FBI FIELD OFFICE TAMPA, INTERPOL FINANCIAL CRIMES, SYNDICATE BOARD DIRECTORS.

“No...” Victoria breathed, her face turning chalk white. “You didn't...”

“I always plan three moves ahead, Victoria,” Julian said, stepping forward with lethal speed.

Before she could pull the trigger, Daniel lunged from the shadows like a striking panther. His heavy hand slammed down onto Victoria’s wrist, forcing the barrel of the gun upward just as a deafening explosion tore through the study.

Bang!

The bullet shattered the expensive stained-glass window behind Julian, showering the room with glittering fragments of colored glass.

Daniel twisted Victoria’s arm behind her back with brutal, practiced efficiency. The Walther clattered loudly against the hardwood floor, sliding across the room. Victoria shrieked in pain as Daniel kicked her legs out, forcing her down onto her knees against the Persian rug.

Michael dropped to his hands and knees, hyperventilating, staring in sheer horror at the smoking gun on the floor.

“Get up,” Daniel growled, hauling Michael roughly to his feet by his collar and shoving him against the mahogany bookcase.

Julian walked over, picking up the fallen silver pistol and pocketing it calmly. He looked down at Victoria, who was glaring up at him with unadulterated hatred, her expensive burgundy silk gown stained with dust and spilled ink.

“You’re ruined,” Victoria spat, her voice cracking with fury. “You and your precious family legacy will burn to the ground!”

“My legacy,” Julian said coldly, “is built on blood and loyalty—two things you and my brother were too blind to understand.”

Before Julian could issue final orders, heavy footsteps echoed rapidly up the grand staircase outside. The double doors of the study burst open, and a young man stepped into the room, flanked by two armed security guards.

It was Elliot.
