Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Family Trust

The security office seemed to shrink around Julian as the weight of Allison’s words settled over him like a lead blanket. Michael. His own flesh and blood—the brother he had raised, protected, and elevated to executive vice-president of the Ricci shipping empire—was conspiring with the woman he was scheduled to marry in less than two hours.
“Allison,” Julian said, his voice dropping into a register so chilling that even Daniel stepped back a half-step. “Did you see or hear anything else? Anything at all.”
“There was one more thing,” Allison whispered over the hospital line, her breathing hitching. “When Victoria slammed the records room door after noticing me in the hallway, she dropped something. I picked it up before she came back out to yell at me. It was a photograph.”
Julian gripped the edge of the console, his knuckles turning white. “What was in the photograph?”
“It was a picture of a little boy,” Allison replied. “Maybe four or five years old, playing in a hospital courtyard. On the back, there was a stamp from St. Anne’s Children's Hospital downtown. But what scared me... what made Victoria look so furious when she realized it was missing... was what she muttered to herself as she walked away.”
“Tell me,” Julian commanded.
“She said: 'That kid is supposed to be dead. If Julian finds out he's breathing, everything we built is gone.'”
The line clicked as the call disconnected, leaving only a low hum echoing in Julian’s ear. He lowered the phone slowly, his mind racing through decades of family history, hidden assets, and buried secrets. St. Anne’s Children’s Hospital. A dead child. A $120 million family trust established by their late father, Don Vincente Ricci.
“Daniel,” Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “Lock down the eastern wing. Nobody leaves the estate. And pull up the master portfolio of the Vincente Ricci Family Trust—specifically the beneficiary amendments filed over the last eighteen months.”
Daniel didn't ask questions. He immediately accessed the encrypted financial database housed on the mansion’s secure local server. Lines of green text cascaded down the screen as he bypassed dual-authentication firewalls using Julian’s master biometric key.
“Boss, look at this,” Daniel said, tapping the screen. “Six months ago, right after the old man’s passing, a secondary codicil was filed under Section 4-B. It alters the primary distribution of the $120 million trust.”
Julian leaned over the console, scanning the glowing legal text. The original document clearly stated that upon Julian’s marriage or succession, the entire estate remained under his sole control, with provisions for Michael. But the amended file showed a shocking alteration: an anonymous secondary entity had been inserted as the primary co-beneficiary, siphon-funding millions through offshore shell companies controlled by a proxy signature.
And the proxy authorizing the transfer?
It bore a digital signature stamp registered under Victoria Langford’s personal corporate entity, countersigned by an internal corporate officer code assigned exclusively to Michael Ricci.
They weren't just planning a wedding. They were executing a hostile takeover of the entire Ricci empire, utilizing marriage as a legal weapon to strip Julian of his birthright and leave him legally and financially neutered.
Before Julian could issue orders to dispatch enforcers to track down his brother, Daniel’s secondary terminal chimed with an incoming alert from St. Joseph’s Hospital.
“Boss... you need to see this,” Daniel muttered, his face pale. “Another report just came through from the hospital. A second catering server from your party was rushed into the emergency ward ten minutes ago. Symptoms?”
“Identical to Allison’s,” Julian finished for him.
“Exact same neurotoxin profile,” Daniel confirmed, pulling up the medical telemetry feed. “Slow-acting paralytic designed to mimic sudden intoxication or natural cardiac arrest if left untreated. The first girl wasn't an isolated incident. Someone poisoned the entire catering support team.”
The puzzle pieces snapped together with horrifying clarity. Allison hadn't just stumbled onto a secret rendezvous; she had become an accidental casualty in a systematic cleanup operation. Anyone who had access to the service corridors during the party was being silenced before midnight.
Suddenly, the primary surveillance monitor flickered back to life. Daniel had managed to successfully de-encrypt and restore a corrupted segment of the missing six-minute video file.
The restored footage showed the service hallway at 8:18 p.m. Michael Ricci—disguised in a standard black-and-white catering uniform with a fake mustache and cap pulled low—stood just inches away from Victoria. He was holding a tray of drinks, leaning in close to whisper something while subtly reaching toward the water station.

As Michael turned his face slightly toward a secondary ceiling camera, his lips moved clearly. Even without audio, Julian could read his brother’s exact words, frozen in time on the high-definition screen.
“She knows everything.”
