Chapter 6 - The Trap Springs Open

The heavy oak door rattled softly as Victoria’s hand brushed against the brass handle.
Julian didn't answer. He stood motionless beside his desk, his eyes locked on the unfinished signature line of the fiduciary trust authorization. Daniel stepped forward, silently drawing his silenced pistol from his shoulder holster, his eyes fixed on the entrance with predatory focus.
“Julian?” Victoria’s voice came again, slightly louder now, carrying a brittle edge of impatience beneath its sugary facade. “Don't be difficult. The guests are waiting for the midnight toast. Open the door.”
Julian took a slow, calculated breath. He walked toward the heavy wooden door, deliberately heavy-footed so she would think he was approaching to unlock it. Instead, he stopped three feet short, signaling silently to Daniel to take position beside the arched bookshelf to the left.
With a sharp twist of his wrist, Julian unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door inward.
Victoria stood framed in the dimly lit hallway, her burgundy silk gown sweeping across the floor, her diamond necklace catching the overhead sconces. But she wasn't alone. Standing two paces behind her, half-concealed in the shadows of the corridor, was Michael Ricci. His dark hair was slicked back, and on his left wrist gleamed the unmistakable custom Swiss chronometer with the dark green dial.
For a second, Victoria’s confident smile faltered as she saw Daniel standing with his weapon raised in the corner of the room. But she recovered with chilling poise, stepping uninvited across the threshold.
“Oh, Daniel, put that tacky toy away,” Victoria scoffed, waving a dismissive hand as she glided into the study like she owned it. “We’re family here. Or at least, we’re supposed to be.”
Michael stepped into the light behind her, his face pale and tight. He didn't meet Julian’s eyes. Instead, his gaze darted toward the mahogany desk, fixating on the open manila envelope and the unsigned trust document resting upon it.
“You’re out of time, big brother,” Michael said, his voice trembling slightly with suppressed adrenaline. “The clock is striking twelve. Sign the papers. It’s over.”
Julian stepped forward, towering over his younger brother. The resemblance between them was undeniable—the same sharp jawline, the same piercing dark eyes—but while Julian radiated raw, hardened authority, Michael looked like a cornered animal wearing a borrowed suit.
“Over?” Julian repeated, his voice dangerously low. “Is that what you call hiring hitmen to poison innocent catering staff, scrubbing security footage, and hunting down a brother our father tried to bury twenty years ago?”
Victoria let out a sharp, theatrical gasp, pressing a manicured hand to her chest. “Julian! What absolute nonsense are you blubbering about? Have you been drinking?”
“Save the performance, Victoria,” Julian snapped, his eyes flashing with lethal fury. “I spoke with Elliot. I know about St. Anne’s Children’s Hospital. I know you didn't eliminate him like you planned—you kept him alive just long enough to forge his proxy signature on these fraudulent trust amendments.”
Michael flinched, stepping back as if struck. He looked at Victoria with a flash of panic. “I told you we should have waited! I told you Julian would dig deeper once the girl collapsed—”
“Shut up, you idiot!” Victoria hissed, dropping her sweet facade in a single, venomous instant. Her face twisted into a mask of pure malice. She reached into her handbag with blinding speed.
Before Michael could finish his sentence, a heavy, suppressed click echoed through the room.

Victoria pulled a sleek, silver Walther PPK from her handbag, leveling the barrel squarely at Julian’s chest. Her hand didn't even shake.
“You always were arrogant, Julian,” Victoria whispered, her eyes burning with unhinged ambition. “You thought you ruled Tampa just because your father handed you a crown. But empires are built on blood and strategy—and you were too soft to see that we were cutting your throat while you slept.”
