Chapter 9 - THE FALL OF VANCE

The glass doors of the balcony flew open once again.

Four uniformed officers from the Seattle Police Department, accompanied by three federal agents from the SEC Fraud Division, stepped out onto the outdoor gallery.

Standing behind them was Patricia Wells, holding a tablet that was live-streaming the balcony audio directly to the federal prosecutor's office.

“Arthur Vance,” the lead federal agent announced, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. “You are under arrest for federal corporate fraud, multi-million-dollar wire embezzlement, and first-degree murder in the death of Elizabeth Hayes.”

William released Arthur’s tie, letting the older man slump against the stone wall, coughing and gasping for air.

The officers stepped forward, pulling Arthur’s arms behind his back and snapping the steel cuffs tightly around his wrists.

Arthur looked at William, his face twisted in venomous defeat. “You ruined yourself, Hayes! You hear me?! Horizon is finished! You'll be broke by morning!”

William didn't even glance at him as the officers dragged Arthur away through the crowded gallery, where three hundred horrified elite guests watched the great Arthur Vance marched out in chains.

The balcony went quiet, save for the sound of the city wind rustling the emerald silk of Emma’s dress.

William stood near the stone railing, his hands shaking, his chest rising and falling in deep, shuddering breaths. Five years of unbearable, soul-crushing guilt were washing out of his body, leaving him exhausted, raw, but finally... free.

He turned around slowly to face Emma.

She stood near the bronze sculpture, holding the silver dictaphone, looking at him with deep, unconditional compassion.

William walked across the stone floor, stopping inches away from her.

He looked down at her face—the woman who had walked into his sterile, cold life four weeks ago with a story about emergency pancakes and moon food, the woman who had dared to challenge him, the woman who had just saved his soul.

“You brought her back,” William whispered, his voice cracking with emotion.

“She was always there, William,” Emma said softly, tears welling in her green eyes. “She was just waiting for you to see the truth.”

William reached out, his large, calloused hand gently touching Emma’s cheek.

For the first time since Emma had met him, the untouchable billionaire tech king let out a ragged, weeping breath, leaning his forehead against hers in the quiet darkness of the night.

“Thank you, Emma,” he choked out. “Thank you.”
