Chapter 10 - EMERGENCY PANCAKES FOR FOUR

Six months later.

The summer sun shone brilliantly over Lake Washington, turning the water into a shimmering sheet of sapphire blue.

The heavy iron gates of the Mercer Island estate were open wide. The security guards in dark suits were still there, but they were no longer patrolling like prison guards—they were smiling, tossing a tennis ball to a golden retriever playing on the front lawn.

The main mansion was completely transformed.

The sterile glass walls were covered with colorful watercolor paintings made by Lily and Toby. The sheets over the grand piano in the music room were gone, replaced by fresh flowers and stacks of music books.

In the spacious kitchen, the smell of sweet batter and melting butter filled the warm air.

Six-year-old Lily and eight-year-old Toby were sitting on wooden counter stools, both wearing miniature chef hats, holding red plastic spoons.

“More chocolate chips!” Toby demanded, giggling as he dumped a handful into a mixing bowl.

“No, more blueberries!” Lily argued playfully, splashing a drop of milk onto Toby’s nose.

Standing beside the stove, wearing a simple linen dress, was Emma, laughing as she flipped a golden pancake on the iron griddle.

A pair of strong, warm arms wrapped gently around her waist from behind.

William rested his chin softly against Emma’s shoulder, inhaling the sweet scent of her hair. He wore a casual white linen shirt, his dark hair messy, looking ten years younger, his blue eyes filled with absolute, radiant peace.

Following the arrest of Arthur Vance, Hayes Horizon Technologies had undergone a massive restructuring. William had stepped down as CEO, taking the company private, appointing Patricia Wells as managing director while he devoted his time to what actually mattered: his son, and the woman who had saved them both.

“Are those emergency pancakes?” William whispered into Emma’s ear, kissing her cheek.

“Only the highest priority emergency,” Emma smiled, turning her head to kiss his lips. “Toby got an A on his science project, and Lily learned how to ride her bike without training wheels today.”

“That definitely qualifies as an emergency,” William smiled warmly.

Toby looked over from the counter, holding up his plate. “Dad! Emma said we get four stacks today!”

“Four stacks it is, buddy,” William called back, walking over to grab four juice glasses from the cabinet.

They sat together at the wide kitchen table—not in a sterile, three-hundred-dollar restaurant under the judgment of billionaires, but in a warm, sunlit home filled with laughter, love, and sweet chocolate-chip pancakes.

William looked across the table at Emma, taking her hand beneath the wood, squeezing her fingers tight.

The silence was gone. The ghosts had vanished.

And for the first time in seven years, the untouchable king had everything he had ever truly needed.
