Chapter 6 - THE BLACK SILK DRESS

The dress sitting in Emma’s wardrobe was not the dress of a nanny; it was the dress of a woman meant to command a room.
It was emerald green silk, floor-length, with an elegant off-the-shoulder neckline that draped perfectly over her slender frame. Beside it lay a small velvet box containing simple platinum drop earrings.
When Emma stepped out of the guest house at 6:50 PM, the rain had cleared into a crisp, starry Seattle night.
A black stretch limousine was idling in the driveway.
Sitting in the back seat was Toby, looking dashing in a tailored miniature tuxedo, his hair neatly combed. Beside him sat William, looking impossibly handsome in a black bespoke tuxedo, his dark hair swept back.
When William looked up and saw Emma walking down the stone path, his breath visibly caught in his throat.
For five seconds, the powerful tech king simply stared at her, his dark blue eyes widening in genuine appreciation.
“You look...” William started, his voice rough.
“Appropriate for a gala?” Emma smiled softly, stepping into the warm leather interior.
“Breathtaking,” Toby offered loudly, grinning from ear to ear. “She looks like a princess, Dad! Right?”
William cleared his throat, adjusting his gold cufflinks, a rare flush touching his jawline. “You look very nice, Emma. Thank you.”
As the limousine glided toward downtown Seattle, Toby held Emma’s hand, pointing out the city lights through the tinted windows. But beneath her silk dress, taped securely to her inner thigh beneath her slip, was the silver dictaphone wrapped in soft plastic.
She had brought it with her. She didn't know what she was going to do yet, but she refused to leave the evidence behind in an empty guest house.
The Seattle Art Museum was illuminated like a palace.
Red carpets stretched from the marble plaza to the grand glass entrance. Dozens of photographers flashed their cameras as Seattle's political and business elite filed inside.
When William stepped out of the limousine, holding Toby’s hand with Emma beside him, the flashbulbs erupted in a blinding storm.
“Mr. Hayes! Who is the woman?!”
“William! Is she the new nanny?!”
“Mr. Hayes, a comment on the SEC merger!”
William ignored the shouting reporters, expertly guiding Emma and Toby through the heavy glass doors into the warm, grand atrium of the museum.
The atrium was filled with three hundred guests in tuxedos and evening gowns, sipping champagne under massive glass sculptures.
Standing near the center of the room, holding a glass of scotch, was Arthur Vance.
He was sixty-two, tall, with silver hair, sharp predatory eyes, and a posture that screamed ancestral wealth. Surrounding him were three senior SEC auditors and two corporate attorneys.
When Arthur saw William enter, his eyes narrowed. Then his gaze drifted to Emma, taking in her green dress, her posture, and the way Toby was clinging to her hand.
Arthur walked over, his heavy dress shoes clicking against the marble floor.
“William,” Arthur said, his voice like grinding stones. “I see you brought a full entourage tonight.”
William’s posture went rigid. “Arthur.”
Arthur looked down at Emma, offering a cold, condescending smile. “And who is this lovely young woman? I didn't realize Hayes Horizon was offering social escorts for corporate events.”
Emma felt a surge of cold fury, but before she could speak, William stepped directly in front of her, his broad shoulders blocking Arthur’s view.
“This is Emma Parker,” William said, his voice dropping into a register that was terrifyingly sharp. “She is Toby’s companion and a personal guest of my family. Watch your mouth, Arthur.”
Arthur raised a silver eyebrow, surprised by the sudden, fierce protectiveness in William’s tone.
“Of course,” Arthur sneered softly. “My apologies, Ms. Parker.”
Arthur leaned in closer to William, lowering his voice so only they could hear. “The SEC auditors are in the private gallery upstairs. They want the final authorization keys for the sensor patents before nine o'clock. Don't keep them waiting, William.”
As Arthur turned and walked away toward the VIP stairs, Toby tugged gently on Emma’s sleeve.
“Emma,” Toby whispered, his small face pale under the chandeliers. “I don't like that man.”
May you like
Emma looked at Arthur Vance’s retreating back, her heart hammering against her ribs.
“Neither do I, sweetie,” Emma whispered back. “Neither do I.”
