Chapter 7 - The Criminal Indictment

Two weeks later, the legal hammer fell.

Samantha Carter was formally arrested at her apartment by local detectives and charged with two counts of felony wire fraud, one count of grand larceny, and one count of misdemeanor assault for the dining room incident.

Because of the overwhelming video evidence and financial paper trail provided by Ethan and my legal team, the District Attorney refused to offer a diversion program.

Sam was forced to surrender her passport, wear an electronic ankle monitor, and post a $50,000 bail—money my parents had to raid their retirement funds to provide.

Ethan officially severed all contact. He hired a civil attorney to freeze Sam’s offshore account, successfully recovering $72,000 of his stolen savings.

One afternoon in early November, Ethan came over to my house to bring me a thank-you gift—a simple, beautiful houseplant and a handwritten card.

We sat on my back terrace, drinking tea while the autumn leaves fell across the lawn.

“How are you holding up, Ethan?” I asked.

“Honestly?” Ethan took a slow sip of tea, looking out over the quiet garden. “I feel like I escaped a cult. I spent three years believing that if I just spent a little more money, or agreed to one more crazy idea, Sam would finally be satisfied. I didn't realize that people like her are bottomless pits.”

“They are,” I agreed softly. “You can give them the moon, and they’ll complain that it isn’t bright enough.”

He looked at me with genuine warmth. “Thank you, Maddie. For showing me the truth before I signed a marriage license with her.”

“You saved yourself, Ethan,” I smiled. “I just provided the receipts.”
