Chapter 4 - The Public Meltdown

By 2:00 PM on Friday, the news of the canceled wedding hit social media like an artillery shell.

Sam, realizing her corporate sponsors were pulling out and Ethan was refusing to return her calls, went into full damage-control mode.

She posted a three-minute, crying video on her Instagram page—where she had over 150,000 followers.

In the video, she sat in her car, tears streaming down her contoured cheeks, using a soft, trembling voice that would have won an Academy Award.

“Hi everyone,” she sobbed into the camera. “I’m making this video because my heart is completely shattered. My wedding, which was supposed to happen tomorrow, has been canceled. My wealthy, bitter older sister, Maddie Carter, decided twenty-four hours before my big day to lock me out of the venue we had agreed upon for months...”

She went on for two agonizing minutes, accusing me of being jealous of her happiness, calling me a "narcissistic corporate executive," and claiming that I was punishing her because I was thirty-four and single.

“She’s trying to ruin my life,” Sam wept toward the lens. “Please... if you believe in love, head over to her business page and let her know what you think of people who destroy family...”

Within thirty minutes, my company’s Google review page and Instagram business account were flooded with hundreds of one-star reviews, hate comments, and death threats from her followers.

“Vile human being!” “Hope your business rots, Maddie!” “How do you sleep at night ruining your sister’s wedding?!”

My assistant called me in a total panic. “Maddie! The online harassment is out of control! Clients are calling asking what’s going on!”

I stood in my glass-walled home office, looking out over my peaceful gardens, feeling a cold, calculating stillness take over my mind.

Sam wanted a public war.

She thought my silence over the years was a sign of weakness. She thought I would hide behind my money and let her rewrite history to save her own skin.

She had forgotten who I was.

I didn't get rich by running away from fights. I got rich by analyzing weak positions and crushing them.

I called Sarah Vance. “Are the security footage files from my parents’ house and my front gate rendered?”

“Yes,” Sarah replied. “High-definition, full audio, fully timestamped.”

“What about the bank statements Ethan provided?”

“Certified by his accountant half an hour ago.”

“Good,” I said, pulling my chair up to my desk. “Let's host a live stream.”
