Chapter 5 - THE SHOWDOWN IN COURTROOM 3B

The Fairfax County Courthouse was packed to capacity on Thursday morning. News crews, high-society spectators, and military liaison officers filled the wooden benches of Courtroom 3B.

Sitting at the defense table was Evelyn Carter, wearing a dark gray, modest dress, her hair pulled back tightly. Her face was pale, devoid of the arrogant majesty she had displayed at the estate three nights earlier. Beside her sat three top defense attorneys, whispering frantically over stacks of paper.

In the front row of the gallery sat General Alexander Hale and Major Emily Carter-Hale, both wearing pristine service uniforms. Their presence radiated calm, unyielding authority.

Judge Patricia Vance stepped up to the bench, slamming her wooden gavel down with a sharp CRACK.

“Silence in the court,” Judge Vance ordered, her sharp gaze sweeping over the defense table. “We are here for the preliminary hearing in the case of the Commonwealth and the United States Military Police versus Evelyn Carter.”

Evelyn’s lead attorney stood up immediately. “Your Honor, my client is a pillar of this community! The events of Tuesday night were nothing more than a heated family disagreement that was egregiously blown out of proportion by an overzealous military intervention. We request an immediate dismissal of all assault and destruction charges!”

Judge Vance leaned forward, resting her chin on her hands. “A family disagreement, Counselor? I have reviewed the bodycam footage from the Military Police officers who accompanied General Hale.”

The judge pressed a button on her console, and the large digital screens mounted on the courtroom walls lit up.

The video played in crystal-clear 4K resolution. The entire courtroom watched as Evelyn screamed at Emily, saw the shredded uniform pieces on the floor, and watched in high-definition as Evelyn lunged forward, swinging her fists directly at Emily’s face before General Alexander cleanly blocked her wrist mid-air.

Gasps filled the gallery.

“That doesn't look like a family disagreement to me,” Judge Vance said coldly. “That looks like unprovoked physical assault against a uniformed officer, accompanied by clear destruction of government property.”

“Your Honor!” Evelyn cried out, breaking protocol and standing up from her chair. “She disrespected me! She wore that... that ridiculous suit to my daughter’s gala! She ruined my family’s reputation!”

“Sit down, Mrs. Carter!” Judge Vance barked, slamming her gavel down. “One more outburst and I will hold you in summary contempt!”

Evelyn’s attorney frantically pulled her back into her seat, whispering furiously in her ear.

Judge Vance turned her attention to the prosecution table. “The court also notes that federal authorities have filed additional charges this morning regarding financial fraud and embezzlement of trust funds belonging to Major Emily Carter-Hale.”

Evelyn’s eyes went wide with pure terror as she looked back at Emily in the gallery.

Emily met her mother’s frantic gaze without a single flicker of emotion. The hunter had finally become the prey.
