Chapter 2 - ARREST IN THE FOYER

The word echoed off the cold marble walls like a gunshot.

Wife.

Evelyn’s furious expression twisted into sheer, unadulterated shock. Behind her, Richard Carter dropped his glass of scotch, the crystal shattering on the floor and spraying amber liquid over his polished shoes. Victoria’s silk fan slipped from her fingers, clattering uselessly against the bottom step of the staircase. The two dozen high-society guests stood with their mouths wide open, paralyzed in absolute disbelief.

“W... wife?” Evelyn stammered, her voice cracking as she tried desperately to pull her wrist free from Alexander’s grip. But the General’s grip was an immovable vise. “What are you talking about?! She’s a major! She’s... she’s my daughter! She isn't married to anyone!”

“She was married six months ago in a private civil ceremony at Fort Belvoir,” Alexander said softly, his voice devoid of emotion. “A fact you would have known if you ever bothered to treat her as anything other than your personal trophy to manipulate.”

Before Evelyn could absorb the revelation, the sound of heavy tactical boots resonated from the driveway.

Stepping through the open glass doors right behind General Alexander was an Army Military Police officer in full service uniform, complete with a high-visibility brassard, tactical belt, and a pair of heavy steel handcuffs held ready in his gloved hands.

With smooth, practiced precision, General Alexander redirected Evelyn’s captured wrist toward the waiting officer.

The MP stepped forward instantly, grabbing Evelyn’s arm, twisting it cleanly behind her back, and snapping the first cuff around her wrist with a sharp CLICK.

“What are you doing?!” Evelyn screamed, her voice reaching a frantic, hysterical pitch as the second cuff clicked into place around her other wrist. “Let go of me! Richard! Do something! I am Evelyn Carter! You can’t touch me!”

Richard Carter took a timid step forward, his hands shaking. “Excuse me, General... this is a private family estate. You can’t just come in here and—”

“She is currently under arrest for destruction of United States Military property,” the MP announced loudly, his voice echoing through the silent mansion. “Specifically, the intentional destruction of military dress items, as well as physical assault against a commissioned officer of the United States Armed Forces.”

“I destroyed a civilian dress!” Evelyn shrieked, struggling frantically against the officer’s iron grip. “It was a civilian dress!”

“You shredded her official military garrison gear alongside it,” Alexander stated coldly, pointing toward the pile of green fabric near the entryway where ruined pieces of Emily’s official service raincoat sat beneath the silk ribbons. “That equipment is federal property. Destroying it is a federal crime.”

The MP turned Evelyn around, leading her toward the open glass doors where two official Military Police cruisers were now parked behind Alexander’s staff car, their red and blue lights flashing silently against the estate’s brick facade.

“Richard! Victoria! Call our lawyers!” Evelyn yelled, her designer heels dragging helplessly against the marble as she was escorted out of her own grand foyer in front of every prominent family in Virginia. “Call the mayor! Call the governor!”

No one moved. No one spoke.

As the physical intervention resolved completely, General Alexander Hale stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Major Emily Carter in front of the stunned family. Emily remained in her original position, her arms crossed calmly, looking at her cuffed mother being loaded into the back of a police cruiser with an unwavering, decisive, and proud expression.

“Are you ready to leave, Major Carter-Hale?” Alexander asked quietly, glancing down at his wife.

May you like

“I’ve been ready for twelve years, General,” Emily replied smoothly.

Together, side by side, they turned their backs on the ruined gala and walked out into the cool night air, leaving the Carter dynasty in complete, unrecoverable ruin.
