Chapter 10 - A NEW HORIZON

The sunset over the Potomac River painted the sky in brilliant shades of gold, violet, and fiery orange.
At the Hale private residence in Arlington, the evening was peaceful. The warm breeze carried the scent of pine trees through the open patio doors.
Emily stood on the wide wooden deck overlooking the river, wearing a simple linen dress, her dark hair blowing gently in the wind. In her hand, she held a framed photograph that had arrived in the mail that morning—a photo of the first graduating class from the Eleanor Carter Veterans Center, all thirty women smiling proudly in front of the restored estate.
Alexander walked out onto the deck, carrying two glasses of sparkling cider. He handed one to Emily, wrapping his free arm around her waist from behind and pulling her back against his chest.
“What are you thinking about?” Alexander asked softly, resting his chin on her shoulder.
“I was thinking about the gala six months ago,” Emily admitted, looking down at the sparkling river below. “About how terrified I used to be that my mother’s voice would always dominate my life.”
“And now?” Alexander asked, kissing the side of her neck.
“Now, her voice is just a distant whisper behind iron bars,” Emily said smoothly, turning around in his arms to look up into his dark, loving eyes. “And my life is finally my own.”
Alexander raised his glass toward her. “To Major Emily Carter-Hale. Unbroken, unyielding, and forever victorious.”

Emily clinked her glass against his, her smile radiant under the twilight sky. “To us, General.”
They drank together as the stars began to appear across the clear Virginia sky. There were no more shredded dresses, no more stolen inheritances, and no more silent sacrifices. The storm had passed, justice had been served, and standing together on the high ground, their future was limitlessly bright.
