Chapter 9 - The Downfall

The click of the handcuffs around Victoria’s wrists was the sweetest sound Daniel had ever heard.
"Daniel, please!" Victoria sobbed, struggling against Officer Davis’s grip as she was led toward the front door. "I did it for us! I wanted us to have financial security! I love you, Daniel! Please don't do this to me!"
"You didn't do it for us," Daniel said coldly, staring down at her without a trace of mercy. "You starved my father. You made him sleep on a concrete basement floor. You humiliated him in his own home. And you thought you were royalty."
He leaned in close to her ear. "You told me you were going to teach him a lesson. Now, Victoria... I’m teaching you one."
Just as the officers escorted Victoria and a hysterical Eleanor out onto the front porch, a black Mercedes pulled into the driveway. Marcus Vance, the crooked attorney, stepped out holding a leather folder, whistling cheerfully.
When Marcus saw two police cruisers and Victoria in handcuffs, he stopped dead in his tracks.
"Marcus Vance?" Officer Miller called out, stepping toward him. "We have a warrant for your electronic records regarding an attempted fraudulent conveyance of title. Step away from the vehicle."
Marcus dropped his folder, papers scattering across the manicured lawn in the afternoon breeze.
Neighbors were already gathering at the edges of their lawns, whispering, pointing, and recording on their smartphones as Victoria Sterling—the woman who had looked down her nose at everyone on the street—was shoved into the back of a police cruiser in tears, mascara running down her face.
Inside the quiet house, Daniel walked into the dining room.
Arthur was sitting at the table, wrapped in a warm blanket, sipping a cup of hot broth Daniel had prepared. The old man looked up at his son, his eyes clear and peaceful.
"Is it over, Danny?" Arthur asked softly.
Daniel pulled out a chair and sat beside him, wrapping an arm around his father's shoulders.
"It's over, Dad," Daniel said. "They will never touch you again. Tomorrow, we’re going to the Route 9 property. We’re going to build that community park you always talked about."
Arthur smiled, a deep, genuine smile that Daniel hadn't seen in over a decade. He patted Daniel's hand with his calloused, working-man fingers.

"Your mother would be proud of you, Danny," Arthur murmured. "Very proud."
