Chapter 5 - The Mother-in-Law’s Arrival

At 10:00 AM the following morning, the front door chimes rang.

Daniel had called in sick to work, claiming a sudden case of food poisoning, but he remained parked two streets away in his SUV. He had already installed two discreet, wireless nanny-cams in the living room and kitchen early that morning while Victoria was in the shower.

Through his phone screen, Daniel watched the live video stream.

Victoria opened the front door with a wide, triumphant smile. Standing on the porch was her mother, Eleanor Sterling, dressed in a designer beige trench coat and oversized sunglasses, carrying a leather briefcase.

"Did Marcus send the documents?" Eleanor asked without even greeting her daughter, stepping briskly into the foyer.

"The courier brought them twenty minutes ago," Victoria said, locking the deadbolt behind her. "Where is Father?"

"Harrison is at the country club with the board of directors," Eleanor sneered, setting the briefcase on the kitchen island. "He's terrified the bank is going to freeze his commercial credit line by Friday. If we don't have the deed to that Route 9 land to post as collateral, the whole company will enter liquidation. Arthur Vance has been sitting on that land like a dragon guarding gold he doesn't even know how to spend."

"Don't worry, Mother," Victoria said coldly, pouring two cups of coffee. "Daniel went to the downtown office early. Arthur is weak today. I gave him only water for breakfast. He'll sign whatever we put in front of him just to get a bowl of soup."

Watching from his car, Daniel gripped the steering wheel so hard the leather groaned.

On the screen, Eleanor chuckled. "Good. You should have put him in an asylum six months ago, Victoria. Letting an uneducated blue-collar laborer live under the same roof as you was absurd. He belongs in a county home where they hose down the floors."

"He will be there by Sunday," Victoria said dismissively. "Once the signature is notarized, Marcus is filing an emergency medical conservatorship. Daniel won't even have legal standing to stop it."

Victoria walked over to the guest room door and banged on it loudly. "Arthur! Get out here! We have guests!"

A moment later, Arthur emerged, shuffling slowly, his hands shaking at his sides. He wore an old sweater, his eyes wide with fear as he saw Eleanor sitting at the dining table with a thick stack of legal papers.

"Sit down, Arthur," Eleanor commanded, not even looking at his face.

Arthur hesitated. "Where is Danny?"

"Daniel doesn't want to deal with your mess anymore," Victoria lied smoothly, pulling out a chair and shoving Arthur toward it. "He told me to take care of this. Sign on the yellow tabs, Arthur. All six copies. And then you can have lunch."

"I won't sign," Arthur said, his voice trembling but defiant. "This isn't Daniel's handwriting. You're stealing my land."

Victoria’s calm demeanor cracked. She slammed both hands down on the mahogany table, leaning into the old man’s face. "Listen to me, you decrepit old fool! You are nothing! You're an old dog who eats where I tell you to eat, sleeps where I tell you to sleep! If you don't pick up that pen right now, I swear to God I will call the police and tell them you assaulted me! Who do you think they’ll believe? Me, or a senile old man who eats out of a dog bowl?"

In the car down the street, Daniel hit the save button on the recording app. The cloud server backed up the video in 4K resolution, capturing every single word, every threat, and every vile expression on Victoria’s face.

Daniel started his engine. He didn't drive toward the house. Instead, he turned onto the highway, heading toward Route 9.

It was time to open the trunk.
