Chapter 9 - Breach on the Third Floor

The heavy doors at the end of the pediatric corridor swung open with a bang. Outside in the hallway, shouting broke out, followed immediately by the sharp, metallic crack of a stun gun firing.

“Stay inside!” Officer Miller yelled, drawing his sidearm and pushing Maya and Julian back into the examination room. He slammed the heavy door shut, locking it from the inside.

Chloe let out a terrified cry, pulling the hospital blanket over her head. Maya didn't hesitate. She threw herself over Chloe’s body on the bed, shielding her daughter with her own frame, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Julian grabbed an IV stand from the corner, his knuckles white, positioning himself between the door and his family. For the first time in months, all his indecision and denial vanished, replaced by the instinct of a father protecting his child.

Outside, heavy footsteps approached the door. A keycard reader on the wall beeped loudly—red, then green.

The door unlocked and swung open.

Marlene Ross stood in the doorway. Her hair was disheveled, her rain-soaked coat dripping onto the linoleum floor. Her eyes were wide, glassy, and completely unhinged. In her right hand, she held a heavy industrial utility knife, stolen from the maintenance cart in the hallway.

“Julian,” Marlene said, her voice eerily calm amidst the chaos. “Step away from them. We have to leave right now. The police... they don't understand. They’re trying to ruin everything we built.”

“Marlene, stop!” Julian roared, stepping forward with the heavy metal pole raised high. “Don't you dare come near my daughter!”

Marlene didn't look at Julian. Her terrifyingly focused gaze shifted past him, locking directly onto Maya and the small figure huddled beneath her on the bed.

“She was supposed to stay quiet,” Marlene whispered, her face twisting into a mask of pure malice. “If she had just stayed quiet, we could have been a family, Julian! I did everything for you! I fixed your life! I got rid of the obstacles!”

Marlene lunged forward, raising the blade.

Julian swung the IV stand with all his strength, catching Marlene across the shoulder and knocking her sideways against the heavy diagnostic equipment. She hit the floor hard, but scrambled back up with frightening speed, turning the knife toward Julian.

Maya didn't wait for Julian to fight her off alone. Driven by a mother’s primal instinct, Maya grabbed the heavy glass water pitcher from the bedside table, rushed forward, and shattered it directly across Marlene’s temple.

Marlene gasped, staggering backward. Before she could recover, Officer Miller and three hospital security officers burst into the room, tackling Marlene to the floor, pinning her arms behind her back, and snapping handcuffs onto her wrists.

The knife clattered uselessly across the floor, coming to a stop against the base of the hospital bed.
