Chapter 7 - The Thread that Binds

The realization hit Maya like a physical blow. The blue sequin sweater.
Maya ran over to the chair, grabbing the heavy knit sweater with both hands. She turned it over frantically, examining the collar, the seams, the decorative detailing along the neckband.
“Maya, what are you doing?” Julian asked, his voice filled with panic.
Maya didn't answer. She brought the collar of the sweater up to the light. Embedded along the inner rim of the neckband was a thin, concealed drawstring channel—a design feature intended to cinch the high collar tight against cold weather. But the thin polyester cord inside wasn't standard fabric. It was reinforced, high-tensile nylon cord.
And the left end of the drawstring had been freshly cut with scissors, leaving a frayed, jagged tip.
“Look at this,” Maya whispered, her voice terrifyingly calm. She held the sweater up for Clara Higgins and Julian to see. “The cord inside the sweater. Someone pulled it from the outside.”
Dr. Harrison, who had just re-entered the room to check Chloe’s vitals, took the sweater from Maya’s hands. He examined the hidden cord and the frayed edge, his jaw tightening.
“A concealed drawstring like this, if yanked from behind with significant force, would function exactly like a garrote,” Dr. Harrison stated grimly. “It would leave a narrow, severe internal pressure line around the trachea without leaving extensive outer skin tearing, especially if padded by the thick knit fabric.”
Julian stared at the sweater, his knees buckling slightly. He slumped into a chair, grabbing his hair with both hands. “Oh God... oh God, no...”
“She didn't choke Chloe on the playground,” Maya said, her eyes flashing with a cold, ruthless clarity. “She set it up before Chloe ever walked into that school. She gave her the sweater. And at recess, she knew where the blind spot in the security cameras was because...” Maya paused, realization dawning again. “Marlene’s company did the security infrastructure installation for St. Jude’s two years ago!”
Detective Miller burst into the room at that exact moment, his phone held to his ear. He looked directly at Julian.
“Mr. Vance,” Miller said sharply. “We just checked the toll plaza records on Highway 9. Marlene Ross’s vehicle cleared the bridge heading northbound at 11:00 AM yesterday—ten minutes after Chloe was found in the ER. And Mrs. Gable, the teacher? We found her. She wasn't fleeing. She was at a medical seminar in Boston all weekend—a trip approved by the school weeks ago.”

The entire cover story had blown apart. The missing teacher was a coincidence. The camera failure was an insider job.
Marlene Ross had stalked into the school during the chaotic morning recess, used her knowledge of the building’s blind spots to trap Chloe near the maintenance exit, cinched the hidden cord around the girl’s neck to terrify her into silence, and disappeared before anyone noticed.
