Chapter 8 - The Hunt for Marlene

By noon, a statewide manhunt was underway for Marlene Ross. Her image was broadcast across news networks, and police cruisers were stationed outside every property tied to her name.

In the hospital room, the atmosphere had shifted from confusion to an intense, hyper-vigilant lockdown. Two armed officers stood guard outside Chloe’s door. Julian sat in the corner, head buried in his hands, completely shattered by the monstrous reality of the woman he had brought into his daughter’s life.

Maya sat on the edge of the bed, softly stroking Chloe’s hair. Chloe was awake now, breathing much easier, her voice slowly returning as the medication reduced the internal inflammation.

“Chloe,” Maya whispered softly. “Can you tell mommy now? Why did she do it? What did she say to you?”

Chloe looked up at her mother, her small hands clutching Maya’s fingers tightly.

“She... she said if I told daddy about the medicine, she would make me go away forever,” Chloe rasped, her voice rough but clear.

Maya felt her heart plummet into her stomach. “The medicine? What medicine, baby?”

“The white pills,” Chloe whispered. “In daddy’s cabinet. I saw her putting them in daddy’s juice every morning. She told me it was special vitamins for his heart... but she told me if I ever said anything to you or the judge, she would pull the string again.”

Maya stood up, turning her icy gaze onto Julian.

Julian looked up, horror written across his face. “White pills? I... I’ve been having severe dizziness and chest pains for the past two months! The doctors thought it was stress from the divorce!”

It all clicked into place with terrifying precision. Marlene hadn't just been trying to harm Chloe; she was systematically poisoning Julian while framing Maya’s custody battle as the source of his failing health. If Julian died of a 'heart attack', Marlene stood to inherit his substantial life insurance policy and estate—provided Chloe was kept terrified, silent, or removed from the equation entirely.

Before anyone could speak, the hospital’s red emergency lights began to flash silently along the upper wall trim, and the overhead speaker crackled to life:
