Chapter 8 - The Fall of Hale Enterprises

By Monday morning at 9:00 AM, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office was fully briefed.
Armed with the forensic evidence package my team provided, along with the recorded burner phone call from the night before, the DA issued immediate, non-bailable arrest warrants for both Evan Hale and Marjorie Hale.
I stood on the front steps of the Manhattan Criminal Court building alongside Marcus and my mother, watching as police cruisers pulled up to the curb.
Evan was brought out first, wearing a dark gray suit, his hands cuffed behind his back. He looked completely shattered—his hair unwashed, his eyes red and sunken. As the officers led him past the press bank, he caught sight of me standing on the steps.
"Claire!" he cried out, his voice cracking with desperation. "Claire, please! Tell them it was my mother! She made me do it! I loved you!"
I looked at him with absolute stillness. "You didn't love me, Evan. You loved the idea that I was foolish enough to pay for your mistakes."
He was pushed gently into the back of the transport van.
Minutes later, a second cruiser arrived carrying Marjorie.
Even in handcuffs, Marjorie attempted to maintain her regal posture, but the smear of mascara under her eyes and her wrinkled designer blouse betrayed her terror.
As she passed me, she stopped, glaring at me with pure venom.
"You think you've won?" Marjorie spat, her voice shaking with rage. "You ruined my family! You destroyed my son's future!"
"No, Marjorie," I said, stepping closer so only she could hear my voice. "You destroyed your son when you taught him that people are just assets to be liquidated. You tried to steal my father's trust. Now, the state is going to liquidate yours."
She was dragged away toward the holding cells, shouting threats until the heavy steel doors slammed shut behind her.
By noon, the financial news networks broke the story nationwide:
"PROMINENT MANHATTAN REAL ESTATE FIRM COLLAPSES MID-INVESTIGATION: HALE ENTERPRISES EXPOSED IN MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR EMBEZZLEMENT AND EXTORTION SCHEME."
Hale Enterprises was placed into immediate court-ordered receivership.
Vanguard Sovereign Capital executed their foreclosure on Marjorie’s pristine mansion, seizing the property and selling its luxury contents at public auction.
Every single sponsor, investor, and client associated with Evan cut ties immediately.
I sat in my office, watching the news coverage on the wall monitor while sipping my coffee.
My mother walked in, carrying a large bouquet of fresh yellow roses—my favorite flowers.
"These were delivered to the house," she said softy, setting them on my desk. "From Richard and your father's old partners. They want to know if you'll take over the financial risk management for their new holding group."
May you like
I smiled gently, looking at the vibrant flowers.
"Tell them my billable rate just doubled," I said.
