Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail

Over the next forty-eight hours, while I was supposed to be on a honeymoon in Italy, I was sitting in my firm's conference room, dissecting the true scale of the Hale family's corruption.
What we found went far beyond Evan's immediate embezzlement.
"Look at this," Sam pointed out on the multi-screen display. "Hale Enterprises didn't just borrow from Vanguard Sovereign. They created three dummy shell companies in the Cayman Islands to funnel investor funds back into Marjorie’s personal accounts."
"How much?" I asked, looking at the complex flow chart.
"Over $4.2 million over five years," Sam revealed. "Your father's trust wasn't just going to cover Evan's immediate debt. They were planning to use your trust as a liquidity buffer to keep the entire Ponzi scheme from collapsing!"
My jaw tightened. "They were going to drain my entire inheritance, leave me with the tax liabilities, and blame the loss on market volatility."
"Exactly," Marcus added, walking in with a fresh stack of court filings. "And here's the kicker: Evan signed a personal guarantee on all three shell accounts. He isn't just an accomplice, Claire. He was the primary architect."
At 2:00 PM on Sunday, my phone rang.
It was Evan's father, Arthur Hale—Marjorie’s ex-husband who had lived quietly in Oregon for the past decade after their bitter divorce.
"Claire?" Arthur’s tired voice came through the speaker. "I just heard what happened from Richard. My God, Claire... I am so, so sorry."
"Arthur," I said softly, softening my tone slightly. "I know you weren't involved in this."
"I knew Marjorie was greedy," Arthur said, sighing deeply. "That's why I left her ten years ago. But I never imagined she would drag Evan into something like this... or that Evan would become capable of doing this to you."
"Evan chose to participate, Arthur," I said firmly. "He tried to trick me into signing away my father's trust."
"I know," Arthur admitted sadly. "I'm not calling to ask you for mercy, Claire. You do what you have to do to protect yourself. But please... be careful. Marjorie is desperate. When she gets backed into a corner, she doesn't act rationally."
"What do you mean?" I asked, picking up my pen.
"Three years ago, before you met Evan," Arthur revealed, his voice dropping to a whisper, "a former business partner of Marjorie’s tried to expose her offshore accounts. She hired a private security firm to harass his family until he dropped the case and moved to Florida."
"She won't intimidate me, Arthur," I said.
"I know you're strong, Claire," Arthur warned. "But check your office parking garage before you leave tonight. She still employs those same people."
My eyes flicked to Sam immediately.
I hung up the phone and looked at my team. "Sam, pull up the security feeds for the parking garage downstairs."
Sam quickly brought up the live cameras showing the underground garage of my office building.
Sitting in a dark, tinted SUV directly across from my reserved parking spot were two men in dark clothes. They had been sitting there engine idling for over an hour.

"They're waiting for me," I said, my voice dead calm.
Sam pulled out his phone with a grim expression. "I'm calling the NYPD."
