Chapter 4 - Unraveling the Network

The dining room went dead silent.
Evan reached out frantically to grab my hand. "Claire, don't do this! I love you!"
"You loved my father's trust fund," I corrected him, pulling a slick, leather-bound tablet from my purse. I walked directly to the front of the room, near the podium where the wedding slideshow was scheduled to play.
My father's oldest colleague, Richard, stepped forward, looking confused. "Claire, dear, what's going on?"
"Richard," I said clearly, looking at the room of eighty guests. "I want to apologize to everyone who traveled here tonight. There will be no wedding tomorrow."
Gasps erupted across the tables. My mother covered her mouth with both hands.
"Claire!" Marjorie bellowed, stepping forward with her face flushed red with rage. "You hysterical, ungrateful little girl! How dare you humiliate my family like this!"
"I'm not humiliating you, Marjorie," I said calmly. "I'm simply presenting the facts. Which is what I do for a living."
I tapped a button on my tablet. The large overhead projector—intended to display romantic photos of Evan and me—lit up with a high-resolution scan of the legal proxy document.
"This is the document Evan and his mother asked me to sign twenty-six hours before our wedding," I explained to the crowd, pointing out key highlighted sections. "They told me it was a routine insurance transfer. In reality, it is an irrevocable power of attorney granting Evan complete control over the Henderson Charitable Trust."
Evan rushed toward the AV setup to unplug the projector, but two of my father's former corporate security guards—whom I had quietly invited earlier that evening—stepped firmly into his path, blocking him.
"And why did Evan need $2.4 million so urgently?" I continued, tapping the screen to bring up the second document from Sam's file. "Because as of 9:00 AM yesterday, Hale Enterprises was officially served with a notice of intent to prosecute for embezzlement."
The room erupted into total chaos.
Evan's wealthy business associates in the back row immediately stood up, looking horrified. One of his major investors, a man named Henderson, glared at Evan with pure disgust. "Evan! Is this true? Is that where our fund assets went?"
Evan couldn't speak. He stood frozen, staring at the screen showing his signature on fraudulent bank transfers.
Marjorie charged toward me, her manicured hands raised like claws. "You ruined my son! You planted those files! She's lying! She's insane!"
My father's friend Richard stepped between us, his face stern. "Marjorie, sit down. Those are certified bank ledgers. I know Claire's work. She doesn't make mistakes."
I looked down at Evan, who was now trembling, clutching the back of a dining chair for support.
"The wedding is canceled," I said into the microphone. "The catering staff has been instructed to serve dinner, and all of my guests' hotel rooms have been fully paid for by my estate. Please enjoy your evening."
I turned off the projector, grabbed my purse, and walked down the center aisle of the room.
As I passed Evan, he whispered, "Claire... please... they'll arrest me."

I leaned in close to his ear, keeping my voice soft and absolute.
"Then you better hire a good accountant, Evan. Because on Monday morning, my firm is turning this entire file over to the District Attorney."
