Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

Senator Hayes stood up, his face red with indignation. Several prominent business partners of the Whitaker estate began exchanging panicked looks. In high society, eccentricities and affairs were tolerated; blatant fraud and grand larceny were unforgivable sins.

"It was for the family!" Eleanor shrieked, completely losing her composure as she pointed an accusing finger at Caleb. "Mallory needed the capital! She has genius! Lauren was just an auditor! She didn't need four million dollars to balance spreadsheets!"

"That wasn't your choice to make, Eleanor," Caleb replied calmly, setting his champagne glass down on the table with a crisp *clink*. "The formal audit, along with the forged signature documents bearing your notary stamp, was filed with the District Attorney's office at noon today."

Eleanor staggered backward, her face turning an ashen gray. "You... you called the police on your own mother-in-law?"

"You forfeited the title of family the moment you stole from my wife and helped Mallory attempt to ruin her life," Caleb stated coldly. "You have until tomorrow morning to retain a criminal defense attorney. And if you attempt to access the offshore accounts tonight, you should know that federal authorities froze them three hours ago."

Two plainclothes detectives, who had been sitting quietly near the back bar, stood up and moved toward Eleanor’s table.

"Mrs. Whitaker?" one of the detectives said, producing a badge. "We have a warrant to question you regarding bank fraud and identity theft. We can do this outside, or we can do this in handcuffs right here."

Eleanor looked around the room, searching desperately for an ally. Her country club friends turned their backs; the society matriarchs looked down at their plates; even her own brother refused to meet her eyes.

Without a single word, her head hanging in absolute defeat, Eleanor Whitaker was escorted out through the side entrance of the ballroom.

A heavy silence lingered over the room for five seconds.

Then, June stood up and raised her champagne flute high into the air. "To Lauren! The smartest, strongest, and most deserving woman in this room!"

The entire ballroom erupted into a standing ovation. Cheers, whistles, and applause echoed against the high vaulted ceilings.

I looked at Caleb, my vision blurred with tears of relief and sheer astonishment. He walked over to my side of the table, wrapped his arms around me, and kissed the top of my head.

"I promised you," he whispered against my ear, "no more shadows."

"You completely obliterated them," I whispered back, laughing through my tears.
