Chapter 5 - The Gathering Below

Downstairs in the historic stone courtyard of the estate, two hundred guests sat on whitewashed chairs, their conversations a low, restless hum. The grandfather clock in the main foyer had already chimed four o'clock. The string quartet had looped Pachelbel’s Canon in D three times.
Whispers were beginning to ripple through the crowd.
"Where is the bride?"
"Did you see Caleb's face when he went upstairs earlier?"
"I heard there was screaming in the bridal suite."
In the front row, Caleb’s parents sat with rigid postures. His mother, Katherine Montgomery, was a woman of formidable reputation—an old-money matriarch who had initially opposed our union until she saw how Caleb looked at me. Beside her, his father tapped an impatient finger against his mahogany cane.
At the edge of the courtyard, behind the rose arbor, the side door clicked open.
Mallory slipped out first. Her eyes were red-rimmed, her face pasty beneath layers of powder, but her expression had curdled back into a defiant, poisonous glare. She walked toward the front row, trying to slide quietly into the bridal party lineup.
Her friend, Chloe, whispered urgently from the row behind her, "Mallory! What happened up there? Is the wedding off?"
Mallory leaned down, her voice dripping with fake tragedy. "Caleb had second thoughts. He attacked me because I tried to protect Lauren from making a mistake. Lauren is having a nervous breakdown. The wedding is probably cancelled."
"What?" Chloe gasped, eyes widening. "Are you serious?"
"Dead serious," Mallory whispered, dabbing at a dry tear. "Caleb is abusive. I always knew it. I tried to tell Lauren last night, and he threatened me."
"Is that so?" a voice murmured from behind the arbor.
Mallory spun around, her heart jumping into her throat.
Standing in the shadow of the stone archway was Caleb. He had finished dressing. His tuxedo was tailored to perfection, the silk lapels sharp, his posture commanding and unflinching. In his breast pocket rested a single white gardenia.
Behind him stood the venue manager, two armed private security guards, and the estate’s head of catering.
"Caleb..." Mallory choked out, her voice faltering. "I was just—"
"You have exactly two minutes to gather your personal belongings from the bridal suite and vacate the premises," Caleb stated, loud enough for the entire first three rows of guests to hear clearly.
A hush fell over the courtyard. The string quartet abruptly stopped playing.
"Caleb, stop this scene!" Eleanor hissed, rushing down the aisle from the foyer, her chiffon scarf fluttering behind her. "Everyone is looking! You can't throw your future sister-in-law out of the wedding!"
"She is not my sister-in-law," Caleb replied, his voice projecting across the silent courtyard with effortless authority. "And she is not welcome on these grounds."
May you like
"You can't do that!" Mallory yelled, losing her composure as she realized the audience was watching her unravel. "I'm the maid of honor! This is my sister's wedding!"
"You're not the maid of honor," Caleb said coolly. "You're a trespasser."
