Chapter 10 - Dancing on the Ashes

By midnight, the storm had completely cleared, leaving behind pure joy.
The live band played soulful Motown hits and upbeat pop classics; the dance floor was packed with friends, colleagues, and Caleb’s sprawling, boisterous extended family. Katherine Montgomery, usually the epitome of reserved dignity, was kicking off her heels to dance with Marcus, laughing louder than I had ever heard her laugh before.
Caleb pulled me toward the center of the floor as the lights dimmed, replaced by a warm amber glow. The opening chords of an acoustic rendition of *Stand by Me* filled the air.
I wrapped my arms around Caleb’s neck, resting my cheek against his crisp tuxedo lapel. The scent of sandalwood and fresh gardenias washed over me, safe and solid.
"Are you okay?" he asked softly, his hands resting gently on the small of my back.
"I’ve never been better," I replied honestly. "For the first time in my life, I don't feel guilty for simply existing. I don't feel like I owe anyone an apology for being happy."
"You never owed them anything," Caleb said, pressing a gentle kiss to my forehead. "Tomorrow morning, our flight leaves for the Amalfi Coast. Two weeks of private villas, cliffs, sunshine, and zero Whitakers."
"That sounds like heaven," I sighed, closing my eyes as we swayed to the music. "What do you think will happen to Mallory?"
"She'll face misdemeanor charges for the vandalism, but the real trouble will be the civil lawsuit and the criminal conspiracy charges regarding your trust fund," Caleb explained, his tone firm. "She’ll have to get a real job, Lauren. For the first time in her life, she’ll have to pay for her own mistakes."
"Good," I murmured. "She needs to learn that the world isn't an audience meant to applaud her bad behavior."
As the song ended, the crowd cheered again, showering us with dried white rose petals. Caleb dipped me low, kissing me deeply as flashbulbs ignited across the room, capturing the moment our new life began.
Two hours later, after cutting a five-tier lemon-lavender cake and tossing my bouquet straight into June’s waiting hands, Caleb and I slipped away through the private exit. Marcus had pulled our vintage black Aston Martin up to the grand steps, its trunk packed with luggage for our honeymoon.
The night air was cool and crisp against my bare shoulders as Caleb opened the passenger door for me.
"Mrs. Montgomery," he said, the words rolling off his tongue with deliberate reverence. "Your carriage awaits."

"Take me away, Mr. Montgomery," I smiled, stepping into the leather seat.
He climbed into the driver’s side, ignited the rumbling engine, and we sped down the winding estate driveway, leaving behind the locked gates, the ruined silk dress, and the toxic legacy of my childhood.
