Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Ambush

While Vanessa was being loaded into a police cruiser, Daniel was desperately trying to play his last remaining card.
Having slipped away from the hospital lobby during the jurisdictional confusion between federal marshals and local police, Daniel had rushed directly to the headquarters of Vance Heritage Properties—my family’s twelve-million-dollar real estate empire.
He looked disheveled, his tie undone, sweat staining his collar, but he still believed he held legal leverage. Under the original estate bylaws, if the primary heir was medically incapacitated, the secondary executive signatory could authorize emergency liquidation. He burst into the executive boardroom on the thirty-second floor, where the board of directors had gathered for an emergency meeting he had summoned by text thirty minutes prior.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Daniel announced loudly, slamming his briefcase onto the mahogany conference table. "I have terrible news. Claire suffered massive complications during delivery. She is currently in a comatose state at St. Jude's."
The board members looked at him in total silence. Nobody spoke. Nobody stood up.
"As her legal husband and the appointed co-trustee," Daniel pressed on, pulling out forged power-of-attorney documents, "I am enacting Section 4 of the Vance Trust. We need to liquidate sixty percent of the commercial real estate portfolio immediately into the Vance Global Holdings shell corporation to protect the estate from tax liabilities."
"Is that so, Mr. Vance?" a dry, commanding voice echoed from the head of the table.
Arthur Sterling, my grandmother’s personal attorney for forty years, slowly took off his reading glasses.
"Section 4 only applies in the event of permanent cognitive brain death verified by three independent neurologists," Sterling stated calmly. "Furthermore, Mr. Vance, you seem to be unaware of an amendment made to the trust six months ago."
Daniel’s eyes narrowed into slits. "What amendment? I reviewed all the estate filings! Claire didn't change anything!"
"Claire didn't," Sterling smiled thinly. "Her grandmother did. Before she passed, Lady Vance left a specific codicil known as the Fidelity Clause. Any spouse accused of marital infidelity or moral turpitude is automatically stripped of all trustee privileges, proxy rights, and inheritance claims."
"That’s nonsense!" Daniel spat, slamming his fists onto the table. "Infidelity? You have zero proof of anything! You can't steal my wife's company from me based on rumors!"
"Who said anything about rumors, Daniel?"
A clear, resonant voice spoke from the double doors behind him.

Daniel turned around as if he had been struck by lightning.
