Chapter 4 - The Trap is Sprung

Daniel’s face drained of color. He shot a frantic, venomous glare toward Dr. Hale, who stood frozen with the syringe in his gloved hand. Ethan was the one person Daniel feared; Ethan had never liked Daniel from day one, constantly warning our late grandmother that Daniel was an opportunistic climber.
"Why would Ethan fly in without telling me?" Daniel demanded, his voice dropping into a harsh, hushed hiss. He leaned over me, gripping my wrist with bruising pressure. "Claire, we agreed this was an intimate moment for us. Your brother brings nothing but chaos."
"Let go of my wrist, Daniel," I said evenly.
"You are having this baby now," Daniel whispered, his breath hot against my cheek, his eyes burning with frantic desperation. "Dr. Hale, administer the sedative. Now!"
Hale stepped forward, uncapping the needle with trembling hands. "Mrs. Vance, please cooperate—"
The heavy oak doors of Suite 804 were suddenly kicked open with an explosive crash.
Three armed officers in federal tactical gear poured into the room, their weapons lowered but ready, followed by two stern-looking men in dark suits wearing Department of Justice badges. Right behind them strode my brother Ethan, looking towering and furious, accompanied by Dr. Evelyn Reed and a team of external paramedics pushing a specialized transport gurney.
"Step away from my sister," Ethan roared, his voice shaking the glass windows. "Step away from her right now, or Hale, I will put a bullet through your kneecap before you touch that IV!"
Dr. Hale dropped the syringe onto the floor. The glass shattered, the clear liquid pooling across the linoleum. Hale raised his hands instantly, his knees shaking violently. "I—I didn't do anything! This is standard procedure!"
Daniel stumbled backward, holding his hands up in sheer disbelief. "Ethan?! What is the meaning of this? This is a private medical procedure! You brought federal agents into a maternity ward?! Claire is in active labor!"
"She is in active labor," Dr. Evelyn Reed announced loudly, stepping past the guards with a pair of sterile latex gloves already snapped onto her hands. "And she is being transferred immediately under emergency court order to St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital, signed by Chief Judge Harrison twenty minutes ago."
"Court order?!" Daniel shrieked, his voice cracking into high-pitched hysteria. "I am her legal husband! I am her medical proxy! You have no legal authority to move her!"
"Your medical proxy was revoked at midnight, Mr. Vance," Ethan sneered, pulling a certified document from his coat pocket and slapping it violently against Daniel’s chest. "Claire executed a durable power of attorney and medical emancipation transfer twelve hours ago, naming me as sole legal guardian of her medical care. And as for you..."
Ethan leaned in until his nose was an inch from Daniel’s ear.
"You’re about to find out what happens when you try to sell my family for fifty cents on the dollar."
Before Daniel could scream or fight back, two federal marshals seized his arms and shoved him against the marble sideboard, patting him down as paramedics swarmed my bed, gently lifting me onto the secure transport gurney.
"Claire! Claire, tell them to stop!" Daniel screamed, thrashing against the marshals' grip. "I love you! I’m doing this for our family! Don't let them do this to us!"
As they rolled my gurney past him, I raised my head from the pillow. I looked at the man I had loved, the man who had plotted to watch me bleed to death while dreaming of another woman’s bed.

"Save your breath for your lawyer, Daniel," I said coldly. "You’re going to need it."
