Chapter 5 - A Cry of Life

The siren of the ambulance wailed like a war trumpet through the morning traffic. Inside the mobile unit, Dr. Evelyn Reed worked with practiced, laser-focused calm. Her fingers monitored my vitals while an ultrasound probe rested on my abdomen.
"Heart rate is strong, Claire," Dr. Reed said, smiling warmly down at me. "Your little girl is ready. She doesn't want to wait for the afternoon."
A fierce contraction rippled across my abdomen, bending my breath into a sharp gasp. Ethan was sitting on the bench opposite me, holding my hand with the unyielding strength that had protected me since we were children.
"Breathe, Claire," Ethan said softly. "You're safe now. St. Jude’s has locked down the entire fourth floor. Hale has been detained at the precinct. Daniel is currently being held in the hospital administration lounge under federal watch until we finalize the felony warrants."
"Did you find Vanessa?" I gasped between contractions, the sweat beading on my forehead.
Ethan’s eyes darkened into chips of black ice. "Vanessa is sitting in a café across the street from the old hospital, waiting for Daniel’s signal. She has no idea everything just blew up in their faces. My investigators have cameras on her every move."
Ten minutes later, the ambulance doors swung open at the rear bay of St. Jude’s Memorial. A team of six specialized nurses and obstetricians wheeled me directly into an operating theater. There were no shady whispers, no suspicious drugs, and no cold glances. Only the bright, sterile white lights of true medical professionalism.
"Claire," Dr. Reed’s voice cut through the haze of pain. "We need to perform an emergency cesarean section. The cord is slightly wrapped, but there is zero risk if we move now. Do I have your consent?"
"Yes," I breathed, tears finally stinging my eyes. "Save my daughter."
The spinal anesthesia was administered with feather-light precision. Within minutes, the crushing pain gave way to numbness. I lay on the table, listening to the rhythmic beeps of the cardiac monitor, staring at the ceiling tiles while Ethan stood by my head in scrubs, holding my trembling hand.
Then, out of the sterile silence, came the sharpest, most magnificent sound the world had ever produced.
A loud, piercing, healthy cry.
"She’s here, Claire," Dr. Reed laughed, lifting a squirming, pink, beautiful baby girl over the surgical screen. "Eight pounds, two ounces. Perfect lungs. Absolutely gorgeous."
Tears rolled freely down my cheeks as they brought my daughter to my chest. Her tiny skin was warm, her little fingers instantly wrapping around my thumb with astonishing strength.
"Her name is Victoria," I whispered into her damp hair. "Because she won."

Ethan squeezed my shoulder, his voice thick with emotion. "Now, little sister... it’s time to settle the debt."
