Chapter 7 - Whispers in the Vault

The master suite felt colder than a morgue.
Ethan broke the silence, his young voice trembling for the first time that night. "Uncle Julian? Father... no. Uncle Julian brought me my telescope last week. He taught me chess."
Dante didn't stand up immediately. He remained on one knee, staring at the floor between his leather shoes. Julian had been by his side through the turf wars in Brooklyn, through the betrayal of the Sicilian families, through the darkest days after Ethan’s mother had died of cancer. Dante had built an empire with Julian at his right hand.
"A raven," Dante said, rising slowly to his full height. Every muscle in his six-foot-three frame was wound tight like a steel coil ready to snap. "Julian wears the raven crest. It belonged to our grandfather."
"Mr. Moretti," Sophia spoke up, her protective instincts overpowering her fear. "A child’s memory can be influenced. She might have seen someone else. She’s only three years old! You can’t convict your own brother on the word of a toddler!"
Dante turned his cold gray eyes toward Sophia. For a second, she thought he might strike her down for daring to question him. Instead, his jaw flexed.
"You don't understand how poison works, Ms. Hayes," Dante said smoothly, though the rage beneath his words was palpable. "The chef used Madagascar vanilla, dark chocolate ganache, and raspberry compote. None of those ingredients smell like bitter almonds. Potassium cyanide smells like bitter almonds. Only someone with an extraordinarily sensitive olfactory nerve could catch the scent over melted sugar."
Dante walked to the vanity mirror, opened a small lacquer box, and pulled out an antique silver pocket watch. He checked the time: 8:42 PM.
"Julian has been lobbying for months to send Ethan to a boarding academy in Switzerland," Dante continued, speaking more to himself than to them. "He claimed the boy needed to be sheltered from our business. If Ethan died tonight, Julian would inherit the bloodline rights. He would take the northern docks. He would inherit the trust fund."
"Father," Ethan whispered, stepping up beside him. "What are you going to do?"
"What must be done to keep you breathing," Dante said. He turned to his head guard, a scarred veteran named Victor. "Is the ballroom still sealed?"
"Yes, Boss," Victor replied, tapping his earpiece. "All eighty-five guests are held in the grand salon. Julian is with them. He’s been demanding that we let the guests leave, claiming it’s bad for PR."
"Bring Julian to the private vault downstairs. Tell him I need him to authorize an emergency lockdown protocol. Tell him we suspect an outside sniper." Dante paused, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "Do not let him suspect that the kitchen was the point of origin."
"Understood, Boss." Victor turned to leave.
"Wait," Dante called out. He glanced at Sophia and Lily.
Sophia immediately wrapped both arms around her daughter, pulling her against her chest. "We are staying here. Please. We don't want to see this."
"You are coming with me," Dante countered without room for debate.
"Why?" Sophia’s voice spiked with panic. "Why drag a maid and a baby into your family execution?"
"Because if Julian sees you, he will know why he was caught," Dante said, his voice dropping into a dark, hypnotic cadence. "And if Lily is wrong, your presence will save his life. But if she is right... Julian will look into the eyes of the child who dismantled his entire treason before he pays for it."
"No," Sophia protested fiercely, backing toward the bed. "I won't let you use my daughter as a prop in your mafia war!"
Dante took two long strides, closing the distance between them until he was mere inches away. He didn't touch her, but the sheer aura of his presence made the air feel thin.

"Ms. Hayes," Dante whispered, leaning down so only she could hear. "Half the men in that salon carry weapons. If word leaks that a little maid's daughter ruined a multimillion-dollar hit orchestrated by the Syndicate, you and Lily won't survive the night outside these walls. You are safe only as long as you are under my shadow. Now, pick up your child, take Ethan’s hand, and follow me."
