Chapter 14 - The Debts We Owe

The silence that followed was heavy and suffocating.
The acrid scent of gunpowder mingled with the sharp tang of vintage wine and iron. Dante stood motionless over the body of his brother for five long seconds before lowering the weapon. He turned around slowly, his gaze locking onto Sophia.
Sophia backed away until her spine hit the cool brick wall. She clutched Lily so tightly to her chest that the little girl let out a soft whimper. Ethan stood between them, looking between his father and the maid who had just risked her life to save him.
"Clear the cellar," Dante ordered Victor coldly. "Take Julian’s body to the incinerator. Clean this room until it looks like it was never touched."
"Yes, Don Moretti," Victor replied, signaling the guards. Within moments, the body was removed, and the cellar was cleared, leaving only Dante, Sophia, Ethan, and Lily in the dim emergency lighting.
Dante took a slow step toward Sophia.
"Is it true?" Dante asked, his voice low, vibrating with an intensity that rattled her bones.
"I don't know what he was talking about," Sophia lied, her voice trembling. "I'm just a maid. I needed the money for Lily's medicine. That’s all I am!"
Dante knelt down in front of them, his massive frame casting a protective shadow over both mother and child. He looked at Ethan first.
"Ethan," Dante said softly. "Are you hurt?"
"No, Father," Ethan answered, wiping the blood from his cheek with his sleeve. "Sophia protected me. She hit Uncle Julian with an iron bar. If she hadn't, he would have shot me."
Dante looked up at Sophia. The cold, unfeeling crime boss seemed to fade, replaced by a father who understood the impossible debt he now owed.
"You saved my son’s life twice tonight, Sophia," Dante said, his voice quiet, sincere, and heavy with emotion. "Once upstairs with the cake. And once down here with your bare hands. In the Moretti family, debts of blood are paid in blood. But debts of life..."
Dante reached out his hand, offering it to her to help her up from the cold floor.
"Debts of life are paid with absolute protection," Dante said. "You will never clean another floor in this house. You will never worry about money, safety, or medicine again. As long as I breathe, no one in this city will ever lay a finger on you or Lily."
Sophia looked at his outstretched hand. It was stained with gunpowder and the blood of his own brother. But behind the violence, she saw a father whose devotion to his son was as boundless as her own love for Lily.
Trembling, Sophia took his hand. Dante pulled her to her feet with effortless strength.
Ethan reached out and gently took Lily’s small hand in his. "You're my sister now," Ethan said with a solemn nod. "I'll protect you from the bad medicine."
Lily smiled faintly, her fear beginning to fade. "You have chocolate on your shirt, Ethan."

For the first time all night, a tiny, genuine smile touched the corner of Dante Moretti’s lips. "Come. Let us go upstairs. The sun will be rising soon, and we have an empire to clean."
