Chapter 15 - The Cold Envelope

By dawn, the Moretti manor looked as though the nightmare had never happened.

The bullet holes in the grand parlor were already being plastered by a specialized cleanup crew. The shattered glass had been swept away, the broken chandeliers replaced, and the bodies of the Castellano mercenaries had vanished into the industrial furnaces across the river.

Upstairs in the private family dining room, a lavish breakfast had been laid out: warm croissants, fresh berries, scrambled eggs, and hot tea.

Sophia sat at the head of the marble table beside Ethan, wearing a clean, soft cashmere sweater that had belonged to Ethan’s late mother. Lily was happily eating a pancake topped with whipped cream, humming a nursery rhyme to herself as if the horrors of the previous night were nothing more than a forgotten dream.

Dante stood by the expansive bay windows, watching the morning mist roll off the Atlantic waters. He had changed into a fresh, tailored navy suit. His hair was slicked back, the Don restored to his terrifying perfection.

Victor entered the dining room quietly, holding a silver tray.

"Don Moretti," Victor said, his tone unusually cautious. "The perimeter sweep is complete. All Castellano safe houses in Manhattan have been neutralized. The northern docks are secure."

"And the Raven Syndicate?" Dante asked without turning around.

"No movement from their known cells," Victor replied. "However... this was found at the main iron gate five minutes ago. Taped to the central pillar."

Dante turned around slowly.

On the silver tray sat a pristine, heavy parchment envelope sealed with black wax. Pressed into the wax was the unmistakable imprint of a two-headed raven clutching a serpent in its talons—the true crest of the Syndicate of the North.

Sophia’s fork froze halfway to her plate. The color drained from her cheeks in an instant.

Dante noticed her reaction immediately. He picked up the heavy ivory envelope and broke the black wax seal with his thumb.

Inside was a single photograph and a typed note on parchment paper.

Dante looked at the photograph first. His eyes widened slightly—an expression Sophia had never seen on the stoic mafia boss before.

The photograph showed Sophia five years ago, standing outside a high-security research laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland, holding the hand of a man whose face was scratched out in black marker. In the background of the laboratory hung the massive steel logo of the Raven Syndicate.

Dante turned the note over and read the words aloud, his voice dropping into a register colder than winter ice:

*"Thank you for executing Julian, Dante. He was becoming incompetent. But do not celebrate your victory too early. The girl who smelled the cyanide is not Sophia's daughter. She is Project Belladonna—the only surviving child of our founder. You have kept her safe for us. Now, return our bloodline to the gates by midnight... or we will burn New York to the ground to take her back."*

Dante slowly lowered the paper.

The silence in the dining room became deafening. Ethan looked up from his plate, confused. Lily dropped her fork, looking at Sophia with wide, questioning eyes.

Dante’s slate-gray eyes turned slowly toward Sophia, locking onto her with a gaze that promised an entirely new storm.

"Sophia," Dante whispered, the cold menace returning to his voice with double the ferocity. "Who is Lily's father?"

Before Sophia could open her mouth to answer, the heavy iron alarm klaxons across the entire fifty-acre estate began to scream in unison. Outside the manor, through the morning fog, the headlights of thirty black armored SUVs appeared at the bottom of the long driveway, advancing straight toward the front gates.
