Chapter 7 - The Cost of Arrogance

The dining hall fell into an agonizing silence, broken only by Chloe’s muffled sobs.

Marcus Kensington’s private guards stood frozen. They were trained professionals, but they weren't stupid. They recognized the emblem on the tactical vests of Damien’s men. They knew that outside these walls, a dozen armored vehicles controlled every intersection for two miles. To pull a weapon here was suicide.

"What do you want?" Marcus whispered, his eyes hollow. "Money? Immunity? I have leverage in the Senate. I can get the state charges against your shell companies dropped. I can make you untouchable."

Damien chuckled—a dark, humorless sound that sent chills through everyone present.

"I am already untouchable, Marcus. You, on the other hand, are standing on the edge of an abyss."

Damien snapped his fingers.

Leo immediately turned the tactical laptop toward Marcus. On the screen, a real-time broadcast of Bloomberg Financial was running. Across the bottom of the screen, the red breaking-news ticker flashed continuously:

*KENSINGTON MARITIME STOCKS PLUMMET 74% FOLLOWING DOJ SEARCH WARRANTS... SENATOR MARCUS KENSINGTON ACCUSED OF HIGH-LEVEL TREASON AND UNDERWORLD MONEY LAUNDERING... SPECIAL PROSECUTORS SEIZE HARBOR ASSETS...*

Marcus dropped to his knees beside Headmaster Ellison, his hands clutching his head as if trying to physically prevent his brain from shattering.

"My life..." Marcus wept, the polished senator instantly dissolving into a broken, ruined old man. "Thirty years of work... gone. In twenty minutes."

"It took twenty seconds for your daughter to kick Maren to the floor," Damien replied coldly. "You should consider yourself lucky I allowed you twenty minutes."

He turned his gaze toward Chloe.

The girl was trembling so violently the folding chair was rattling against the marble. She looked at her father—the omnipotent, untouchable man who had always solved every problem, bought off every dean, and silenced every traffic violation—now kneeling in the dirt like a beggar.

"Chloe," Damien said.

She gasped, looking up with wide, bloodshot eyes. "Y-Yes, sir?"

"You wanted to see what was in that trash bag," Damien said, pointing to the black plastic sack that lay ruptured beside her chair. "Go on. Empty it."

"What...?"

"You made an accusation," Damien continued, his voice dropping into that chilling, inescapable command. "You told the entire school that Maren was a thief. You said she stole your trinket to pay for baby clothes. So look through the trash. Prove you were right."

"Please," she whimpered, tears streaming down her neck. "Please don't make me do that..."

"Empty the bag, Miss Kensington," Damien commanded, his voice suddenly roaring like thunder. "Or I will have Leo strip you of everything you're wearing and leave you on the steps of Boston City Hall to face the federal marshals alone!"

Sobbing uncontrollably, Chloe slid off the chair and fell to her hands and knees.

Her manicured hands, which had never done a single day of manual labor in her life, reached into the black plastic bag. She pulled out discarded paper coffee cups, greasy napkins, half-eaten cafeteria food, and used floor wipes. She clawed through the refuse, her designer dress soaking up coffee stains and grime, gagging as the foul smell filled her nostrils.

"There's... there's nothing here," she choked out, her face covered in snot and tears. "There's no watch. There's nothing."

"Of course there isn't," Damien said, looking down at her with pure disgust. "Because she is ten times the human being you could ever hope to be."

He looked at Headmaster Ellison.

"As for you, Ellison."

The headmaster squeezed his eyes shut, trembling like an autumn leaf. "Mr. Rowe... I only did what the donor board instructed! The Kensington family gave twenty million for the athletic complex! I had to protect their reputation!"

"Briarwell Academy is finished," Damien said simply. "As of eight o'clock tomorrow morning, the Rowe Foundation assumes ninety percent of the school's outstanding debt. By noon, the deed to this property transfers to Maren’s name. You will clear your office by nightfall. If you are ever seen within five miles of an educational institution again, I will personally ensure you spend the remainder of your natural life in a supermax facility in Colorado."

Ellison slumped forward, pressing his forehead against the floor, entirely broken.

"Get them out of my sight," Damien ordered Vance, who had just re-entered the hall.

"What about the Senator and the girl, boss?" Vance asked.

May you like

"Hand Marcus over to the federal agents waiting at the gate," Damien commanded, turning toward the exit. "As for the girl... let her walk home. In the rain. Let her see what it feels like to have nowhere to go."
