Chapter 11 - The Shadow Behind the Glass

The nursery in the eastern wing of the penthouse was nearly finished.
Two weeks had passed since the night of the proposal. The walls had been painted a soft, soothing sage green, accented with hand-painted gold leaf borders depicting delicate forest blossoms. A crib crafted from solid white oak stood near the arched window overlooking the private rooftop garden, covered in plush hypoallergenic linens.
Maren walked slowly through the room, her hand resting on the small of her back. Her pregnancy was advancing smoothly; Dr. Aris had confirmed yesterday that both mother and baby were in peak physical health.
The legal transfer of Briarwell Academy was complete. The "Maren Rowe Sanctuary" was scheduled to open its doors in three months, already funded with fifty million dollars from seized offshore accounts. Chloe Kensington had been formally expelled from the educational system, her father was awaiting sentencing in a federal detention center, and the elite social circles of New England had learned a terrifying, permanent lesson about the cost of arrogance.
Everything seemed peaceful.
Too peaceful.
Damien was in his private study down the hall, reviewing shipping manifests with Vance. Through the open door, Maren could hear the deep rumble of his voice, calm and commanding, organizing the defense networks that kept the perimeter completely impenetrable.
She smiled to herself, stepping closer to the massive bay window of the nursery to look out at the autumn sunset casting long, purple shadows across the Boston skyline.
She took a deep breath, resting her forehead against the cool glass.
"We did it, little one," she whispered to her belly. "Your daddy brought us home."
Suddenly, the air in the room shifted.
The hair on the back of Maren’s neck stood on end. A strange, unnatural silence seemed to suck all sound out of the penthouse.
Down the hallway, the low murmur of Damien’s voice abruptly cut off.
*Click.*
The sound was tiny, mechanical, and came from the floor beneath the white oak crib.
Maren turned around, her brows knitting together in confusion. "Damien...?"
On the polished hardwood floor, nestled directly between the legs of the baby's crib, a small, silver cylindrical device blinked.
A tiny crimson LED light pulsed: *one second... half a second... continuous.*
Before Maren could even scream, the heavy mahogany door of the nursery was kicked off its hinges.
"MAREN! GET DOWN!"
Damien flew into the room like a ballistic missile. He didn't hesitate. He didn't look at the device. He launched his entire body across the floor, wrapping his massive frame completely around Maren, tackling her away from the window and toward the reinforced corridor just as the glass behind them detonated inward.
A high-caliber sniper round tore through the triple-pane ballistic glass where Maren’s head had been resting half a second earlier, shattering the pane into a spiderweb of white fractures.
Simultaneously, the device under the crib didn't explode with fire—it hissed violently, discharging an opaque, pressurized cloud of neurotoxin smoke into the nursery.
"Vance! Code Black!" Damien roared into his tactical collar, his body completely shielding Maren as he scrambled on hands and knees, hauling her through the doorway into the concrete-reinforced hallway. "The building is breached! They're inside the air ducts!"
Alarms began to scream throughout the penthouse—a high-pitched, deafening wail of sirens that triggered the building’s automated blast shutters, slamming heavy titanium plates over every window.
Maren clutched Damien’s shirt, coughing violently from the fringes of the toxic mist, her heart slamming against her ribs in sheer terror. "Damien! The baby—!"
"I've got you! I have you!" Damien yelled, lifting her entirely into his arms as four of his elite bodyguards converged around them with assault rifles raised.
Then, through the howling sirens and the hissing of the ventilation systems, the private intercom system on the wall crackled to life with static.
A distorted, mocking voice echoed through every speaker in the compound—a voice that was neither Marcus Kensington nor any Romano capo.
It was a woman’s voice. Cold. Aristocratic. And dripping with venomous amusement.
"Did you really think the Kensington girl was acting alone, Damien?" the voice purred through the speakers. "Did you really think a schoolyard bully hacked an encrypted state server without help? You killed the pawn, my darling. But the board belongs to me. And that bastard in her belly will never see the light of day."
May you like
The lights in the entire penthouse flickered once, twice—and plunged into pitch-black darkness.
Damien stood in the suffocating shadows, his arms locked around Maren, his eyes glowing with an incandescent, murderous fury as the sound of boots hit the roof directly above their heads.
