Chapter 9 - The Promise Kept

Three weeks later, the estate hosted its annual winter gala. The grand ballroom was filled with warm candlelight, crystal chandeliers, and the soft sounds of a live orchestra playing slow waltzes. Society elite, corporate leaders, and family allies filled the room, sipping champagne and offering congratulations to Victor for restructuring the Moretti board.
Bridget stood near the grand terrace doors, wearing an elegant emerald green silk gown that swept the floor. Her hair was pinned up softly, exposing her delicate neck. She no longer looked like the terrified girl who had curled up on a thin mattress outside a bedroom door.

He offered her his arm, and she slipped her hand around his elbow without hesitation.
“Are you enjoying the evening?” Victor asked, leading her toward the terrace doors.
“It’s beautiful,” Bridget smiled, looking up at him. “But I like the house much better when it’s quiet.”
Victor chuckled softly, stepping out onto the stone balcony with her. The cool night air blew gently off the sea, carrying the crisp scent of pine and salt.
“I have something for you,” Victor said, reaching into his jacket pocket and pulling out a small velvet box.
Bridget’s heart skipped a beat as he opened it, revealing a delicate platinum key set with small diamonds along its spine.

“What is this?” she asked softly.
“It’s a master key to every door in this mansion,” Victor said, taking her hand and placing the key gently in her palm. “You will never be locked out, and you will never have to hide in the shadows of this house again.”
