Chapter 4 - Cracks in the Syndicate

Julian turned around, smoothing his silk tie to mask his sudden unease. “Victor, surely that’s improper. She is your ward, not your guest. Moving her into the master suite will stir up talk among the family council.”

“Let them talk,” Victor said, stopping just inches from Julian. The physical contrast between the two men was stark—Victor was built like a stone pillar, while Julian was slouched and aging. “The council answers to me. And starting today, all security clearances for the north wing are revoked, including yours.”

Julian’s face flushed deep red. “You dare restrict my access in my own family estate?”

“I restrict anyone who endangers what is under my protection,” Victor stated coldly. “If I see you near the north hallway after dark, Julian, I won't ask for an explanation. I will treat you as an intruder.”

Julian glared at Victor, his mouth twisting into a bitter sneer. He leaned in closer, dropping his polite facade. “You think you can protect her forever, Victor? The Vance debt is due next month. If you don't sell her father’s shipping docks to my investors, the syndicate will tear this house down around your ears.”

“Let them try,” Victor replied quietly.

Julian turned on his heel and stormed out of the conservatory, the glass doors rattling behind him.

Bridget stood up from her chair, her hands clutching the back of the seat. “Victor, is it true? Is my father’s company in danger?”

Victor turned to her, his face softening instantly. He walked over to her, taking her small, cold hand in his own large palm. “Your father’s legacy is safe, Bridget. I took an oath to protect you and your name, and I have never broken an oath in my life.”

“I don't care about the money or the docks,” Bridget whispered, looking up at him with wide, earnest eyes. “I just want to feel safe.”

“You are safe,” Victor promised, lifting her hand to his lips and pressing a soft, deliberate kiss against her knuckles. “I give you my word.”
