Chapter 10 - Justice and Ash

By sunrise, the rain had stopped, giving way to a pale, misty dawn that rolled across the manicured lawns of the Aldridge estate.

The morning headlines were already printing across every major news network in the nation.

*BEAUMONT EMPIRE CRUMBLES: BILLIONAIRE ARRESTED IN MASSIVE CONSPIRACY.*

*THE GHOST OF PIER 42: DECORATED HERO ELENA VANCE EXPOSES DECADE-LONG TREASON.*

*JUDGE ARTHUR VANCE RESIGNS AMID FEDERAL PROBE.*

Special Agent Miller of the FBI stood on the estate terrace, holding a sealed black leather folder containing the Presidential pardon and official reinstatement documents for Elena Vance.

"Full honors restored, Captain," Miller said, handing her the dossier. "The Pentagon has issued a formal apology to the families of your fallen team. The military trust has been refunded, and their names will be inscribed at the National Memorial in Washington next month."

Marisol took the folder, feeling the crushing weight of eight years finally lift from her shoulders. "Thank you, Miller."

"The Director wants to know if you're returning to active duty," the agent added, glancing toward the sleek black town car waiting in the circular driveway. "With your skill set, they’d give you your own division."

Marisol looked across the lawn toward Gabriel, who was watching her from the garden steps, his hands shoved into his coat pockets, waiting patiently.

"Tell the Director my war is over," she said firmly. "Captain Elena Vance died in Philadelphia. And she’s finally earned the right to stay dead."

Miller nodded with a respectful tip of his head, turned, and walked toward the gate.

Marisol walked across the wet grass, stopping in front of Gabriel. The morning sun broke through the gray clouds, catching the gold highlights in her dark hair.

"So," Gabriel said softly, a nervous smile playing at his lips. "What does a former ghost do with her retirement?"

"I don't know," she smiled back. "I hear the Aldridge family is in desperate need of a new head of household security. The pay is terrible, but the employer has a decent heart."

May you like

Gabriel laughed, stepping forward and pulling her into his arms. Marisol rested her head against his chest, listening to the steady, comforting beat of his heart. For the first time in nearly a decade, she closed her eyes without calculating exits, listening for footsteps, or waiting for an explosion.

She was safe. The truth was out. The past was laid to rest.
