Chapter 5 - A Deadly Confrontation

Deep within the basement corridors beneath the manor, the humming of the climate-control units drowned out the distant sounds of shouting above.
"The server room," Marisol instructed, moving like a phantom through the shadows. Gabriel followed close behind, watching in awe as she navigated the subterranean layout with flawless familiarity. "Your family kept the original 2016 shipping manifests on an offline hard drive in the private archive."
"How do you know where my father keeps his offline servers?" Gabriel asked, breathless.
"Because I installed them," she replied without breaking stride. "Before the fire, when I was still working under federal cover, your father was cooperating with us. He didn't know Beaumont had already subverted the Aldridge board of directors. Your father thought he was helping the government expose a rogue cartel."
Gabriel swallowed hard. "My father died of a heart attack six years ago."
"His autopsy was falsified too," Marisol said grimly, reaching a reinforced steel security door labeled *ARCHIVE B*. "Beaumont poisoned him with synthetic potassium. Made it look like natural cardiac arrest because your father had begun asking too many questions about Pier 42."
Gabriel’s world tilted on its axis. The grief he had carried for six years suddenly morphed into a searing, righteous fury. "He killed my father?"
"And he’s about to kill us if we don't move faster," Marisol warned.
She pulled a compact multi-tool from inside the seam of her maid skirt, popped the faceplate off the digital keypad, and crossed two copper wires. The lock buzzed, flashing green, and the heavy door slid inward.
Inside, rows of humming server towers bathed the concrete room in cold blue light.
"Over there," Marisol pointed toward a vintage standalone terminal. "The Beaumont-Aldridge master ledger. Julian thinks the only copy exists in his offshore vault, but your father kept a mirror drive right here."
She sat at the console, her fingers dancing over the keys with mechanical speed. Lines of green code cascaded down the CRT monitor.
*CLACK-CLACK.*
The sound of a shotgun racking echoed from the doorway.
"Step away from the keyboard, Captain Vance," a voice ordered from the shadows.
Marisol didn't turn around, but Gabriel stepped forward instinctively. Standing at the threshold was Julian Beaumont himself, flanked by three burly operatives clad in full tactical gear, their submachine guns raised and leveled at Marisol's chest.
"Julian," Gabriel spat, stepping directly into the line of fire. "You murdered my father."
"Your father was weak, Gabriel," Julian said smoothly, stepping into the blue glow. He leveled a pump-action twelve-gauge directly at Gabriel’s forehead. "He lacked the stomach for empire. He thought a shipping fleet was just about moving freight across the Atlantic. He didn't understand that true power lies in moving things the world pretends don't exist."
Julian shifted his gaze to Marisol’s back. "Turn around, Elena. Let me look at you. It’s been eight long years."

Marisol hit *ENTER* on the console. A progress bar appeared on the screen: *UPLOADING TO SECURE CLOUD SERVERS... 12%... 24%...*
Then, she slowly stood up, raised her hands, and turned around to face her executioner.
